Defining a decade with a song: 1970s

Don McLean's song "American Pie"
Absolutely.

(Though I was born in late '70, so my memories of tunes from that era are limited. My parents listened mostly to John Denver and Johnny Cash [dad] and Perry Como and Andy Williams [mom]. I do, however, have fabulous memories of the summer of '78 or '79 and camping our way across the states...every campground's rec room had a juke box and YMCA is all that played...)

This is a good choice, but I'd still give the edge to "Stayin' Alive." Thats a more enduring hit, as well as a virtual symbol of the decade.

"Now you can tell by the way I wear my pants that I'm a man; can't take no chance." -- Robin Williams (singing falsetto)

I don't know if it is more enduring. American Pie is a stable on the oldes stations everywhere. Disco has such a love hate relationship with it, I think American Pie has the edge.

I love American Pie and always listen to it completely when it comes on the radio. But for those of us who didn't live through the entire 70's (born in 74) we just look back at what history thinks of the 70's. And history says the 70's were all about Disco even though it was only for the latter half of the 70's. This is why I think Stayin' Alive is a better choice.

By that standard, I'd still go with "Dancin' Queen" by ABBA. "Stayin' Alive" had its flash-in-the-pan, but "Dancin' Queen" still gets remade today - and not just by ABBAteen. ;)

I was born the same year. 70's had a lot of miusic, punk started in the decade, you had the big coperate rock like Asia, Journey, and others. Ya, the Discos where a flashy point people remeber but they were not everything.

That's because you still hear the original "Stayin' Alive" instead. Nobody has the balls to remake it.

I mean, really, it's still used just about any time anyone wants to suggest 70s, or disco. It is quite possibly the most iconic songs of a type of music and of an entire decade that I know of.
