Defying Gravity

I saw no commercials or promotions for this SF series on ABC, but I stumbled across the two hour (two episode) premier last Sunday, and ended up watching it. I liked it, so far anyways.

If you didn't see it, it's on Hulu, here. It's set in 2052 (IIRC), and the premise is that a spaceship called the Antares is taking off on a 6-year tour of the solar system with an eight-person crew. Except there's something weird going on (of course).

The science is, of course, not perfect -- for example, they give an explanation why everyone walks around (rather than floats), but that doesn't cover why their hair & other things aren't always floating (the reason for that is that it's a TV show, and it would be bloody expensive to do that). Then there's the apparently instantaneous Earth-to-Mars communication. But the Antares looks something like a real spaceship probably would work, and the world building seems kind of interesting (some offhand comments imply some intriguing societal changes).

I'll catch the next couple of episodes, at least.

I've not seen it, but I read something about the Earth-Mars communication not being Earth-Mars communication but Mars-Base Orbiting Mars communication. Or something. Like I said, haven't seen it, but thought I'd pass on an out-of-context snippet.

This show likes its pop music waaaaaaaaaay too much. In something like LOST, you might get a pop song tastefully used once every two or three episodes. Even crappy teen shows like Smallville would only use one song an episode, and only at the denoument.

I think they had something like 3 songs in the span of an hour of Defying Gravity. Blech.

I happened to catch it flipping through channels as well. I didn't think it was terrible, but it wasn't anything special either. I'm certainly not going to go out of my way to watch it.

I was a bit turned off by the utopian/clean sci-fi vibe at first. However, I think that was more because dark/gritty sci-fi has been at the fore for a while now. A couple of the science/astronomy things bugged me a bit as well.

It seems to me that the show is more of a drama set in space, rather than a hardcore sci-fi story. This isn't surprising, seeing how a fair amount of the staff worked on Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, and Desperate Housewives. Admittedly, the head exec (Perriot, IIRC) also has a bunch of sci-fi experience as well, so we'll see.

The pilot and episode two are available. I'll have to give it a shot and see what's up with it.

Uh, your issue with the show is the soundtrack? So other than that did you like it or dislike it?

Me, I thought it was very entertaining. My hope is that the mystery ends up interesting. From what I saw it's not on their fall schedule and only has about 6 episodes in the can. Not sure if that means 6 from the pilot or 6 including the pilot but with the fall season rolling out soon it can't be on much longer than a couple of months tops.
