Deicide: The slaying of Cyric. 3.5 Epic

I have no information on Marshalls, so that would be difficult for me.

I have several thoughts of who/what the cohort could be though.

1) Captain of the Guard. This is a brickish/warriorish character built to be both a bodyguard and a leader of the character's Followers. Possible builds include classes from the Tome of 9 Swords, possible monk levels, and PrC's that complement them.

2) Spymaster. This cohort is a sneaky and subtle sort...a rogue, ninja or bard perhaps. Still a leader of the Followers, only now the Followers are a spy network. Can be useful in our company by providing skills we may lack. Occasionally useful in combat, either with sneak attack type damage, or by providing bardic bonuses. Fragile; may be hard to keep alive, especially before I take Epic Leadership.

3) Wee Beastie! The cohort could be nonhuman, a sentient monster of some kind, perhaps serving as a steed, perhaps just a companion. Some monsters have low enough hit dice and ECL that this option could be merged with one of the first two ideas...a Pixie Spymaster, for example, or a Psuedodragon.

I like the idea of the spymaster, like an information coordinator, ala Varys from Song of Ice and Fire.

Sidenote: being a rogue, and an epic rogue as such, I would assume that our characters would've crossed paths at some point in time.

You mean your PC and my cohort? Or our PCs?

I'm actually leaning towards a bard for Spymaster...they have a bit more resources to choose from, and could even help us in a fight if need by by providing buffs and bonuses. The lack of Trapfinding isn't a terrible handicap at this stage of the game...

Plus, if you're going rogue, I don't need another rogue as a cohort. :)

I am going rogue. And right now I'm leaning toward my rogue going back for financial gain back-to-the-future-sports-almanac-esque. I'm thinking we could either have my rogue and your cohort know each other well in a good light or in a rivalry light.

PerHAPS...though your character is so far ahead of my cohort, that it wouldn't be much of a rivalry...

What if my cohort had been tutored by yours at one point? A former student...

Though I don't want to take any rogue levels...and you haven't got any bard ones... Hmm..

My rogue could've stabbed your bard once, or had the cohort follow his exploits. I'm not sure if I want to make the rogue nefarious or not. Perhaps that should be figured out first and foremost.

What's your Epic character again?

My character is an epic sorceror. I haven't determined much background yet. I have one level of monk, then sorceror, then Incantatrix. The monk level gives me access to Ascetic Mage, and the huge AC bonus that provides. It's also an interesting characteristic.

I see the character as having come from a humble monastic background, then chosen to follow sorcery on discovery of her magical gifts. Then, after long adventures that culminated in some big local thing, like the repulsion of an orc invasion somewhere North, she settled down somewhere reasonably remote and started working idly on the things epic spellcasters usually do...immortality, pocket planes, etc...

The cohort and spy ring is how she kept in touch with the outside world while doing her own thing. Didn't want to be caught by surprise while her attention was elsewhere, after all.

Interesting. I don't mean to be rude or frank or anything, but if your PC is reclusive and monastic, what would a high level, highly connected information broker/spy be doing following such a character? Saved its family? Life debt?

I can see my character and your cohort being pretty connected but not our PC's.

Hee hee

No, that's a good question. The answer is that my PC wasn't always reclusive or monastic. You don't get to be epic level sitting on your bum in a castle.

My cohort joined my PC during their adventuring days.

Further, my cohort wasn't originally a spymaster. That role grew as my PC gradually started achieving the loyalty...in various ways...of the eyes and ears that would become the network.

My thought was that the mage settled down finally in some relatively quiet spot...but that she still is a defender of the realm, and uses the network to keep an eye on things and check to see if she's needed.
