I have no information on Marshalls, so that would be difficult for me.
I have several thoughts of who/what the cohort could be though.
1) Captain of the Guard. This is a brickish/warriorish character built to be both a bodyguard and a leader of the character's Followers. Possible builds include classes from the Tome of 9 Swords, possible monk levels, and PrC's that complement them.
2) Spymaster. This cohort is a sneaky and subtle sort...a rogue, ninja or bard perhaps. Still a leader of the Followers, only now the Followers are a spy network. Can be useful in our company by providing skills we may lack. Occasionally useful in combat, either with sneak attack type damage, or by providing bardic bonuses. Fragile; may be hard to keep alive, especially before I take Epic Leadership.
3) Wee Beastie! The cohort could be nonhuman, a sentient monster of some kind, perhaps serving as a steed, perhaps just a companion. Some monsters have low enough hit dice and ECL that this option could be merged with one of the first two ideas...a Pixie Spymaster, for example, or a Psuedodragon.
