I worked out a spreadsheet to help me check the whole base 24, +/- racial mods + class advancement + DR + 21. Here's what I came up with for a number of gods:

Boccob -5
Corellon Laerthian -5
Ehlonna -6
Ares -5
Erythnul -5
Fharlangh -3
Garl Glittergold -5
Heironeous -5
Elishar -3

What am I doing wrong? Or is the formula not as accurate as we believed? It seems like I'm missing a 5 somewhere....

Hmmmm.... Keeping in mind that I haven't seen the book, would size be a factor? (Also keeping in mind, I haven't played the game in about 10 years....)

the way they came up with the stats for the Gods is starting to stinkingly smell similar to how they came up with the statistics for Dire Animals. In other words, they used no formula what so ever. However, it appears that the system you guys mention is still usuable (the 24 base +/- racial + class mods + divine rank + 21 etc etc)

So, pretty much, we may have to just revise all the deities to suit our taste?

Is this just your opinion, or does this come from some source?

if you reverse engineer all the deities in DDG you will find that most (not all, but most) deities do indeed follow a pattern with their ability scores:

24 (base) + 21 points (randomly assigned) + divine rank (randomly assigned) + ability increases for class levels.

As for the Dire animals in the MM, I have reverse engineered each of them as well as their normal animal counterpart. THere is no straightforward formula that they used.

[minor thread hijack and shameless plug]
The Tome of Horrors (hardback print version of the Creature Catalog site; to be released by Necromancer Games) includes a Dire Template that allows you to create your own dire creatures. It is as close to matching the dire animals in the MM as you can get.

Hey, Scott! The plug was more that welcome. The Tome sounds great. I love monster books, and this is the best one I've heard of (next to the monster manual, I suppose).

Anyway know why my gods keep coming up at -5? Are we sure the formula is correct? Someone do one of the gods I listed and see if you come up with -5, will you please?

Boccob? Sure-
------------------------------------------
Alter Reality, Alter Size, Arcane Mastery, Area Divine Shield, Automatic Metamagic (quicken wizard spells), Automatic Metamagic (silent wizard spells), Automatic Metamagic (still wizard spells), Avatar, Control Creatures (any creature that can cast a spell or use a spell like ability), Craft Artifact, Create Greater Object, Create Object, Divine Blast, Divine Creation, Divine Shield, Divine Skill Focus (knowledge [arcana] ), Divine Skill Focus (Spellcraft), Divine Spellcaster, Increased Spell Resistance, Instant Counterspell, See Magic, Spontaneous Wizard Spells.

I hope that helps.
