The 2 tactics should not be used together... demonic dragons with thousands of HP are a bit much!

Funny you should mention that...

I was making up a dungeon called the Pit of Souls for my upcoming game. I had decided that 13 terrible demons once ruled part of the world. Most where elimited, but a few survived and descended to the Pit of Souls. I was fiddling with the Seventh Sanctum Evil God name generator to give them names, and one of them was "Fyiel, The Evil All-consuming Dragon of Misery." I am waffling right now between making Fyiel a huge half-fiend shadow dragon or a half-dragon nightshade with lots of extra HD (straight out of Bastion's Villains.) Whatever the case, the PCs aren't meant to fight it. The villains that are trying to get something from the pit of souls speak of Fyiel in hushed tones.

A demon/devil with a few levels of illusionist/nondetection type magic. He's not evil, he's a celestial!

"Hi! I'm a celestial from Bob the God. I need you to do X, Y, and Z. Here's some magic items to help you out. Bye!"

X, Y, and Z, are of course quests that will cause the PCs dooms if they do it the way the 'celestial' asked them to do.

The magic items are cursed very subtlely and/or corrupt the users.

Remember, killing a demon or devil doesn't actually kill it, it just sends it back to its home plane.

If your party manages to get lucky and wax a demon, that demon will be back later on, better prepared, and with friends. All you've really done is given it an axe to grind against you.

There is nothing in 3e to support that, unless the creature happens to be summoned.

Although since demons summon allies rather than gate them in nowadays, there are a lot more summoned demons around than there used to be.

I've tried sending hordes of modified lemures (add regenaration, equipment and an Int of10 at my player) against them and it worked very well.
No, my real problem is for the "ancient demon summoned by this evil cult/released from the ancient vault/copper lamp/box of cereal...":p
I haven't been able to find efficient demons that can bring fear alone at the level I need: with 8 players I can't just throw them a marilith or a Balor, those have spells that my party has no chance against.
Thanks for all the ideas, yeap, a fallen celestial might be what I need...
For the moment they have killed Cernugons/Gelagons/Vrocks/Hezrous/and the 4 armed dog-one without breaking a sweat. On the other hand 3 trolls L1-barbarians and they start bleeding to death...

I'd still stand by my original post. What they don't know and don't understand is scary, while a bunch of stats and a picture isn't. Put your demons up front less and have them do stuff from out of scene. Think horror movie.

Osyluths. Those icewalls are horrific. Split them up with walls between them and waste them one by one. Add darkness for them to protect themselves.
