Desert of Desolation Gallery is up!!

I actually like the set. Sure there are some real stinkers (manticore, dwarfen brawler) and there isn't the raw quality of the last few sets, but I see lots of minis I can use. And honestly, that's the most important thing for me.

I am amazed by all the positive comments. In my opinion, the set is well below-average in terms of sculpts and paintjobs (nowhere near Blood War, Angelfire, or Giants of Legend), and slightly above-average in terms of creatures chosen. However, roughly half of the set consists of resculpts of minis that have already been released in one of the earlier sets.

Look at the minis: not a single one has properly painted eyes (whereas even some uncommons from previous sets have them); most rares have only one or two colors; there are two minis (Nightmare and Yuan-Ti Champion) that have armor which is apparently glued onto them (i.e. it looks ridiculous). I could go on all day long...

Agreed.

I like the umber hulk a lot and a couple of others, but IMO this is a horrible set overall.

Astral Stalker
Capricious Copper Dragon
Bar-Lgura
Cyclops
Black Woods Dryad
etc. etc.

They all have painted eyes (those that have eyes anyway) and in earlier sets they were only ever dots for eyes anyway.

most rares have only one or two colors;

Yeah but...

Blood of Vol Fanatic - Common (4 colours)
Merchant Guard - common (5 colours)
Militia Archer - common (4 colours)
farmer - common (6 colours)

most of the ones with a limited colour palette are that way because they suit it, you can hardly make a Osyluth or Capricious Copper Dragon more than a couple of colours.

Hmmm maybe it's magical, it is a fantasy game after all.

However the biggest appeal of the set to me is there seem to be more miniatures in it that I can actually use in the RPG game, rather than the miniatures game.

I should have clarified - I was referring to humanoid minis, and to eyes which are more than black dots. There were uncommon and rare humanoid minis with properly painted eyes (whites, pupils, the whole shebang) as far back as Giants of Legend. To me, it is INEXCUSABLE to try to pass a humanoid as a rare (99% of humanoids end up costing $3-$5 in the secondary market, i.e. they are damn near worthless) and not even have properly painted eyes.

Both the original Bone Devil (Archfiends) and Large Copper Dragon (Angelfire) have more colors than their DoD-counterparts. That's ridiculous.

Oh, come on.

None of the sets are particularly Skirmish-oriented. I'd say that fewer than 30% of minis from any given set end up being playable in Skirmish. Of course, YMMV.

Well I like the set.
Anything to let me have the right mini without painting.
I am sad the mummy is an uncommon, I wanted boatloads of those.

I'm thinking that you'll be able to pick up a bunch cheap on e-bay. Since there have been previous mummies, I'll be it will probably be one of the less expensive uncommons.

Not too bad a set, though I'd only half of them that I'd want. And only half of those that I'd really want. I'll buy a pack and hope I get lucky with a cube and some of the others.

I'll probably have to go to e-bay for what I really want- including the cube. Even though I suspect the cube will be the new stirge. :(

I really like this set.

Some really good and some really bad, but that's usually par for the course. Still, the good stuff is stuff that I REALLY LIKE and stuff I'd really like to have. The bad stuff is stuff I don't really want, even if it did look good.

The Good:
Animated Statue
Bar-Lgura
Cyclops
Drow Blademaster
Feral Troll
Flame Snake
Guardian Mummy
Naga
Osyluth
Ravenous Ghoul
Sahuagin Baron
Snaketongue Cultist
Tiefling Cleric
Umber Hulk

The 'Suck':
Manticore
All the animals (except the blade spider, since it's a vermin)

The PC figures look fair, but overall, this set has a pretty good list of stuff that I want and that's what's important.

I hope they are cheap to get. I believe the only other WoTC mini of a mummy is the rare from Harbinger though.
