I'm for both the hood idea and Umbran's.

I think the main thing is "be appreciative". It's not exactly the same as your situation but we got my wife her first ever new car this year. Even though it was back in May, rarely a week goes by when she doesn't hug me and say, "I LOVE my new car!" It makes me happy every time.
