Sometimes, you do the big gift to see the recipients eyes light up, and the smile grow, and that's enough.
The other thing you can do is a gift you can't tell him about. Remember what he did here. Remember how thoughtful it was, and how much effort it took. And when he does something that really cheeses you off - remember what he did, and let it pass.
Now this has been the best suggestion I have heard thus far ... not that I would know anything about all this, not being married and all, but it seems the best.
