Destiny of the Valenar

Eliseri: [sblock]You won initiative. You spot a small figure crouching in the shadows of a large boulder with a crossbow leveled at you, about 25 feet from where you sit your horse. The figure is wrapped in light colored cloths, their face hidden behind a cloth mask that depicts the face of a growling dinosaur. Beneath you you can feel a slight gurgle...as if the bolt peirced one of your horses lungs.[/sblock]

Nialan: [sblock]OOC: You are short two languages. What two languages other than common and elven do you speak?[/sblock]

[sblock]Whooops. Let's go with Draconic and Sylvan.[/sblock]

Nialan Valera

"I could benefit from any knowledge you would like to share regarding the halfling tongue. Before yesterday, I had not seen a reason to learn it."

Kindric grins wryly at Nialan. "Very well. I may mock you about this later, but for now, a lesson," he says. After a moment's pause, he begins, "There are a number of different levels of welcome that the halfling language expresses readily. I tend to address them as not-hostile neighbors, assuming we're actually not hostile at the moment." Kindric then says "not-hostile neighbor-dwellers" in Halfling, by way of example.

Nialan: [sblock]When you sit to read the scroll, you realise that it is written in a language you don't know. The script is harsh and dark. You think it is likely one of the native khorvarian languages[/sblock].

Nialan Valera

Nialan attempts to repeat Kindric's first lesson. "Not-hospice tree-dwellers...Hmm...let me hear that one more time?"

"Oh, since you seem to know at least one language that's a bit more obscure, perhaps you can read this?" Nialan holds out a scroll to Kindric.

"No, no, I think it was Not-hostile tree-orange."

Upon seeing the scroll, Well'Xix suddenly remembered his own gift. Reaching into his pouch, the warlock drew out the mask and examined it quizzically. "Fortune favors the bold," he muttered, placing the mask on his face, confidently.

His brow furrows in response to his students' efforts. "All right, not so bad, but it's a little different - aspirate the 'h' a little more there, Nialan - and Well'Xix, listen to how I said it, not how Nialan did. Not-hostile neighbor-dwellers, do you hear how that's a little different?"

Although his skepticism is plain to see, Kindric examines the offered scroll. He digs through his backpack for the black arrow and his own scroll. Unfurling both scrolls, he eyes them critically.

OOC: Common, Elven, Halfling, or Goblin...? Not bloody likely.

Kindric: [sblock]The scroll is written in an old form of dhakaani. You can recgonize most of the words and make fairly educated guesses about the rest, enough to get the gist anyway. This scroll appears to be a copied history, originally written by a goblin during the height of the Dhakaani empire. It details a Goblin patrol lead by a hobgoblin named Gheraar Akec meeting an unusual creature he referrs to as the "Huukaal Or Dagaal'daar Regon", roughly translated to "Pointed ear traveller Regon." That last word you are not familiar with as it clearly isn't a Dhakaani word. The encounter was rather peacable-no blood was shed. This creature showed up on a massive ship with massive sails, crewed by other "Huukaal Or Dagaal'daar" spoken of often as being "too small." The meeting is spoken of as a first encounter, and some commentary at the end describes it as the first "dar ghaakhec" of the "long war that followed, many years later." You are not entirely sure what "dar ghaakhec" means. The commentary also mentions that this was-inexplicably-NOT the last time a creature called "Huukaal Or Dagaal'daar Regon" came to these shores. He should have been dead when he returned.[/sblock]
