Detect Scrying

I am a little unclear on the wording here.

If the scrying attempt originates within the area, you also know its location; otherwise, you and the scrier immediately make opposed caster level checks (1d20 + caster level). If you at least match the scrier’s result, you get a visual image of the scrier and an accurate sense of his or her direction and distance from you.

So...if the scryer is 30' away from you, you know that, but if it's not, you can learn the identity/location of the scryer? Can you not learn the identity of the scrier if within 30'? Has anyone played this? I had always thought that it took Epic skills to learn the identity of the scryer...
