Geoff

First Post
Yes sir, it's time again for another gander at what's in store for you in a few short weeks. This time around we have a little peek at some firearms for your hombre to carry while on the trail.

So just mosey on over to the Sidewinder: Recoiled page, take a look and let us know what you think.

The previews are looking great, Geoff. I'm definitely going to like having specific weapons to choose from in Recoiled, instead of generic like was in the original Sidewinder.

The original Sidewinder was great. One might add that a certain d20 game by WotC now used as Sidewinder Recoiled 's basis certainly seemed to have, at least, learned a few lessons from Sidewinder. I'm looking forward to this one, and I have to agree that specific weapons make a difference.

A few questions:

Why did you guys feel it necessary to repeat stuff from d20 Modern in Recoiled? Did you just want that all-in-one feel? Since it's a d20 product, it requires Modern anyhow, doesn't it? Or am I wrong about the d20 designation?

Will the gun damage be leveled artificially like it is in d20 Modern? Have you changed anything about d20 Modern's gunplay rules, or did you convert to them completely? The reason I ask is that gun fighting in Sidewinder is deadly, but d20 Modern kinda takes the bite out of guns. The danger of gunplay is one of the things that makes the Old West an exciting genre.

Are you using d20 Modern's nonlethal system as is? Another exciting aspect of the Old West is your cliché bar fight or pistol whippin'. d20 Modern takes the teeth out of fisticuffs too.

Thanks for sharing this stuff!

Geoff is off on a business trip, so he won't be around for a few days. Therefore, as one of the authors of Sidewinder: Recoiled, I will take a crack at answering your questions.

You already guessed the answer. We do want that all-in-one feel. We also wanted you to be able to bring just one book to the gaming table. Of course since [/i]Sidewinder: Recoiled[/i] will be d20 compliant instead of OGL, you will need the d20 Modern book during character creation (if you can't remember the relevant details).

I am not quite sure what you mean by "leveled artificially", but let me expound on our philosophy on gunfights. We wanted gunfights to be a bit more lethal than standard d20 Modern allows. Furthermore, we wanted to work within the framework already established by d20 Modern. We modified the lethality of the system primarily through rule changes that increase the frequency of massive damage saves, particularly during those first few crucial seconds where everyone is trying to "clear leather". We have also included some optional rules that put more danger into massive damage saves.

I am not sure I agree with your assessment of the viability of d20 Modern's nonlethal combat system. On the other hand, I am well aware that many people hold the same opinion as you. To help accommodate such feelings we have included optional rules for fisticuffs. However, the basic system is unmodifed from d20 Modern and the optional rules are only variants, not complete rewrites of those rules.
