Dragonblade
Adventurer
So in preparation of the impending switchover to 4e, I decided to update my dice. I have an eclectic collection of dice I have gathered over the years, all from various mismatched sets. I was thinking of retiring my dice, and buying several new sets, all of the same color to bring some uniformity to my dice collection. It will also help me identify which dice are mine at the table.
I'm not sure how many dice I need though. 4e seems to have you roll multiples of dice like d8's and d4's that in prior editions never saw as much use as having a lot of d6's. And it seems like in this edition, I don't need as many d6s as I have now. I want to have at least enough dice at the table so that even at level 30, I don't have to roll the same die type more than once. In other words, if a power calls for 6d4, I want to have 6 d4s available to me, not roll 2d4 three times.
So based on what we know (or better yet, can a 4e designer or playtester pop in and comment), what is the total amount of dice I should have on hand for each type to be able to handle any roll needed even up to level 30? How many d4s, d6s, d8s, d10s, d12s, and d20s should I have?
(d20's are a special case. Since area attacks could result in multiple d20 rolls for multiple creatures, its the one area where I'm not worried about rerolling.)
I'm also thinking of picking up some name tents that people use at meetings to put their names on and set in front of them. Only instead of names, I'll have it set with duration effects like "Poison 5" written on both sides. That way when I DM I can just drop it down in front of the affected player for everyone to see and remember until the player saves.
Anyone want to take a stab at answering my dice question, or want to talk about game supplies they plan on getting for 4e?
