D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

I haven't done the algebra to see what the D&D dollars are likely to be, but the knowns are that 2024 didn't fail, because that would have been called out.
I doubt they would want to call that out if they can get away with not doing so, i.e. it is not so catastrophic that D&D shrinks by 50% or so and it becomes very obvious in the high-level numbers they prefer to present

That being said, just staying flat (compared to what, 12 months ago or the previous quarter?) might not be great already (if it is the former, not the latter). I doubt they would consider it a success when all it did were sell no better than 2014

It's not staying flat, D&D is still growing.

We should remember the possibilities of Netflix producing different D&D animes, or at least some episodes with independient stories and group of characters. Witchlight could be cozy fantasy, more focused into comedy. Ravenloft doesn't need introduction. Birthright is perfect for romantasy+palace intrigue. Dragonlance could need more pre-production. Mystara has got two spin-off, Red Steel/Savage Coast and Hollow World.

My suggestion for a D&D isekai is somebody from Kamigawa: Neon Dinasty who was killed during the Phyrexian invasion was reincarnated into Eberron or Mystara.

This is why this topic is endless.

We simply don’t know the actual revenue and profit numbers for D&D on its own, so we cannot say whether or not it met the goals of the company, and we certainly cannot determine that any given edition failed. What we have is little bits of information that can be interpreted different ways but are not enough to give a clear picture.

I have no complaints really with 5.24/5.5. That being said tho, I'm not gonna stop using my 2014 books being used alongside the 2024 books until WoTC OFFICIALLY phases 5E out and brings about 6E.

So I have my Franken 2014x2024xToV going on.

Also I low key like/enjoy using 2014/2024 Backgrounds and ToV's Heritages subsystem together during character creation.

According to their public statements, they will never do that - the plan is to stick with 5e forever, and to just call it D&D, not 5e. What we will see is additional evolution within that framework. Again, according to WotC. So you’re safe!

It’s also not clear how they could even do a clean break to a new edition without crippling the game, given that 60% of the player base, and growing, is apparently now tied to DnDBeyond.

Oh yeah I know 5E evergreen now. I was just saying that I haven't stopped the use of any of the books I own
