Did You Back a Million Dollar TTRPG Kickstarter? How's The Game?

I am just curious: if you backed one of the Million Dollar Kickstarters, and assuming the game is either out or being developed transparently for backers, how do you like it? Do you play it? Do you think it warranted the hype that drove up the KS final tally?

For my part: the only one I backed (and late) was Shadowdark and YES, that game is awesome in every way.

  • Avatar the Last Airbender: played and liked it
  • MCDM RPG / Draw Steel: not playtested it yet
  • Strongholds & Followers: occasionally used it, but mainly backed to support Colville
  • Old Gods of Appalachia: backed to support Appalachian creators and content. I've played Cypher System, so I know what I'm getting with it. I have not played it yet. But I know that I would need to have a "cultural sensitivity" chat with any potential German players.
  • Flee Mortals: backed and used it. Great book.
  • The One Ring 2E: I have not played it yet. It's on the docket as my partner is interested.
  • Dolmenwood: backed but not yet played it
  • 7th Sea: my group in Austria backed it for the pdf library of 1e materials but they bounced off 2e HARD

I backed Dolmenwood and backers have basically the final PDFs of everything. It's an amazing setting and I can't wait to run it. It's extremely richly detailed and well-organized, and the adventures are up to the usual Necrotic Gnome standards.

It's debatable whether they needed to include the house-ruled b/x with it. It doesn't take up to much space and the modified rules do make sense, especially given the specificity of the setting, so I'm for it, but other people felt it was unnecessary.

Though, by default backers will be more interested in the games they backed, and so more likely to think highly of them? I don't get the hype around a lot of $M kickstarters, but that's just because those games are not for me.

I would be curious to know
  • which $M kickstarters were disappointments to backers themselves, and not just because of fulfillment issues
  • which $M kickstarters grew or might grow an audience beyond the backers

For example, it strikes me that MCDM has a core group of fans that will be interested in Draw Steel, and many of those have already backed. I wonder if it it will draw in new players, even those that don't watch Colevile's videos, after it launches.

I backed the first two MCDM Kickstarters: Strongholds and Followers and Kingdoms and Warfare but really haven’t ever put them into use. I do like the monsters from them though, and at some point, I may pick up Flee, Mortals. I also really love the artwork and the writing style.

I cannot wait for my Magnus Archives RPG though!
