I wonder how many people who have read the Fourth Edition rules and didn't care for the game have still gone on to try it, as it seems you haven't.

Well I did try it, kind of.

I mostly DM, so I put together a one-shot adventure for a D&D Meetup here in NYC. I liked the encounter building method and the short monster stat-blocks but at the end of the session while my players had fun I realized that play really felt like a spruced up version of the DDM game. While this is great for some people, it's really not something that I'm interested in at the moment.

On the bright side I've ripped stuff from 4E to use for my 3.5/Pathfinder games . So Yay? Kinda?

In terms of learning what's different and new from the 1E/2E/3E rules that are hard-wired into my brain. Raising three kids has a way of making one feel stupid. :)

I know what you mean - though I ended up going the other way - having 2 under 2 meant that the "easier to DM" element of 4e was Very Important.

(esp. after high level 3e)

I had heard that 4E 'plays better than it reads' from multiple sources - WotC marketing, Ain't It Cool, Wired, playtester leaks on forums etc.. Raced to get the boxed set on release and was underwhelmed on first read-through but knew that the proof of the pudding..... It wasn't until I played it (I guess our group made it through about 2 months) that I realised what a disappointment it really was. Most (if not all) of the ingredients were there, but somehow the cake just didn't taste the same.

Flavour is a mysterious thing - I don't think anyone really knows how D&D got to taste the way it does, but 4E is an object lesson in how easy it is to cook a turkey. That's enough ham-fisted food images for now - I'm off for an analogy sandwich.

This.

And now they sit on my shelf where every couple of weeks I pull them off and try to get enthused about the system as a whole. So far? FAIL.

Heh, me too. Though I last tried a couple months ago.

On the upside I'm having great fun with 3.5e, C&C, LL, Moldvay and OD&D these days...

You're Gming for under-2s? Wow! My son is 19 months, and he's only just started taking an interest in my C&C PHB... I wasn't planning to start GMing for him for at least another 17 months. :D

Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more - I came home the other night, and my 15-month-old was sweetly gnawing on my 1E DMG. She's so cute when she does that....  Bad daddy, for leaving it next to my chair the night before!
