Did you ever play Empire of the Petal Throne?

Yep, under several four system -- original EPT, GURPS, Harnmaster, and FATE.

I love the concept of the world, but I always get lost in the material. I keep waiting for a really good GM that way.

Nope. Signewd up for three con games of it but the GM never showed for any of them. I had a book of it but it vanished somewhere.

Yup- the original game (which I sure wish I had kept), and then I TRIED to get a Swords & Glory game started back when that was first released but frankly I could never get my players through character creation- that system (the parts they released) was a complete freaking mess-as a game, as a game line, and the presentation. I sold it not long after I bought it.

I almost picked up the Gardyisal (sp) boxed set a few weeks back when I saw it at a game store in VA- but I started having flashbacks of the S&G Players book, and put the box back on the shelf ;)

Tekumel is a fantastic setting- but def can be overwhelming- and thats coming from someone who is/was a Glorantha fan ;)

I wanted to run it, but as others have mentioned, Tekumel is so culturally unique and detailed, I just never knew what to do with it.

Every now and then, I think I should find a copy and revisit it; see if 28 years has given me a different perspective!

I have played three times with Professor Barker running the games. This was at a con several years ago. It was great fun to play with the creator. Talk about not needing any notes!

I owned the Guardians of Order version for a while, but it became clear after a while that it was not complete. It lacked several important cult rituals, several rules clarifications, and some background stuff... I was shocked to learn that the original version assumed the PCs were outlaws, working outside a stratified and baroque society, when the GoO version clearly spends a lot of time detailing the culture, and a brief paragraph on the horrible, short, and doomed life of an outsider. Seemingly, a lot of fun could be had from shattering social expectations as with a hammer, but the core rules supposed not only very social characters, but a number of traits considered important that would become meaningless the moment you stepped outside the law.

I'm tempted to find some older versions of the setting, maybe adapt them to GURPS, Fantasy Craft, or something.

Yeah, I'm running it actually. Been running over a year, currently up to 7 players plus the Ref (me). The survivors of the original cadre are almost 5th level; new characters start at level 1 (currently have a couple of those in the party).

The original focus was my megadungeon under the city of Jakalla; the PCs were barbarian refugees from across the sea. The original cadre have earned Tsolyani citizenship and founded a clan. They are now in a ruined temple complex out in the forest-jungle of Gilraya... think Angkor but older and with a weird dungeon underneath. The game have been quite a mix of dungeoneering, politics, wilderness, etc.

I have an article about it coming in Fight On! magazine #7.

We're using the original (1975) Empire of the Petal Throne rules. Still in print and available from the excellent Carl Brodt:
Tita's House of Games | Tékumel Items

I picked up the 1975 boxed set and played with its original system when it first came out as an alternative to D&D sometimes. I remember having trouble getting many other players of my age (early/mid teens) to join in because of its strangeness.
