I left DnD (well, RPGs overall) about 1990 after a really nice 11-12 year run. Had a brief few year return @2013-2014 (a heavily home-brewed 2e game by a very gracious DM). Moved, now looking to start up some 5e at a nearby small-town library to help get younger folks into the game. I'm probably a "once/month" type now, but I'll go every few weeks if folks get into it.

I suppose if you want to interpret it that way it's up to you. But wouldn't it be kinder to tell yourself "all the things you love are an acquired taste...sort of like hoppy beer...and most of the market doesn't have your connoisseur's nose for excellence?"
When the lead designer explicitly referenced anti-4e edition war slurs, even if he intended them as a joke, it was pretty clear what the actual sentiment was.

4e was what brought me back. I'm so old that I was once aghast that the upcoming "Basic" D&D was going to make races into classes, so you might predict that I would have hated 4e -- as so many of my fellow grognards did -- but nope. I guess I'm an odd bird.

From 1981 to 2002 D&D was my main game (Basic Moldvay, AD&D, 2e, 3e and 3.5). I played continuously.

In 2003 stopped playing 3.5, preferring to play D20 Modern and Star Wars SAGA instead. When 4e came out it brought me back to D&D for about two years. After that I preferred playing other non-WoTC rpgs.

When it came out 5e brought me back to D&D for about 2 years. Then, I took a break from all rpgs preferring to play miniature wargames.

In 2017 5e brought me back to D&D again. Since then I've alternated between D&D5e and other rpgs.

I did not vote because I could not choose both 4e and 5e.

I never left. I think most of that is the fact that I play with my father and brother. There has been a weekly game (mostly) since the early 80s. We tend to just play D&D and not other RPGs. Even when I was in the Army I played, more monthly instead of weekly though. When I returned home my little brother was playing in the group as my older brother never came back to playing after high school. There was some time in the 90s when we played more MagicTG instead of D&D, but still played every couple weeks.

Now, the rest of the group has moved on, but my father, brother and son still play weekly. Likely will just buy the new books and play the new edition when that comes out.
