Differences between 1st & 2nd Edition?

Aha, but reduced visibility is different from complete invisibility ;)

The gods did appear in the supplement Legends and Lore very early on in 2E's life but didn't have much impact until Planescape in 1994 (the only reason I actually bought Legends and Lore!) so yes they had less of a foothold in 2E than they did in 1E arguably.

Demons and devils were not just re-named but also removed from the "core" monsters. They didn't show up until MC8, a couple of years after 2E came out.

True. Though, IIRC, they were reintegrated into the core MM with the revised AD&D 2e rulebooks (the black ones), which may throw off some late-comers.

Legends & Lore is a reprint of an AD&D 1e supplement (Deities & Demigods). Only the title is different.

Sorry, it is a different book entirely - the Melnibonean and Cthulu mythos are absent. The stats are 2E format, and the gods are all given speciality priests in accordance with 2E rules. It is a 2E book, not a 1E book. Oh and the art is different.

It is definitely not a reprint. An update perhaps in one light, but not a reprint.

EDIT: Ah I see the confusion. Legends and Lore was the second title in 1E. But it was completely reworked to the new rules.

Those two mythos were already gone since the third printing of D&DG. From the sixth printing onwards the title was changed to Legends & Lore as was the cover art. The internal content was the same.

There was also a L&L book for 2nd edition, though.

Legends & Lore first came out in 1983, long before 2E (as a renamed Deities & Demigods). Later there was a 2nd edition Legends & Lore

So, the correct answer is that there was one in 1st edition and one in 2nd edition.

Assassins, barbarians, monks, cavaliers and half-orcs were gone.
Initially. Later some were added back into the game.

Yep monks and assassins in Scarlet Brotherhood. Barbarians got their own handbook, and monks got... I'm tempted to say 'the shaft 'but the popped up in the Priest's Handbook, and cavaliers got into the Fighter's Handbook. Half-orcs were... Book of Humanoids?

All true... only illusionist never came back as a full fledged class. (Even though they, along with the other specialists, got some class-specific powers in the Complete Wizards Handbook.)
