Different Spellcasting Classes - Different Religious System

In contemplating the shape of new spellcasting classes and my continued dismay at the lack of flexibility of the cleric, I was given to wonder more about the clearic. Regardless of which deity you follow, it seems that there are some idiosyncracies that clerics ALL have that might be well to be explained away by some fluff (or if you prefer, flavor) explanation in their background, and that perhaps regardless of deity, all clerics are part of some over arching pantheon or beleif system. Say, for example, that there is a reason (like some forseen Ragnarok type event) that all clerics have armor training, even clerics of supposedly peaceful deities, and all have chosen weapons that play into their spells.

Having done that, one might imagine that different divine spellcasting classes represent different beleif systems with a different cosmological view (or, to make up for the fact that they obviouosly live in the same cosmology, different roles in the cosmos.) For example, spirit shamans (or whatever shamans you actually use) approach less powerful spirits that exist in the world.

Given this, how many different potential beleif systems / religion models / etc. can you come up with that could co-exist and be explained by the variety of divine spellcasting classes out there:

  • Clerics
  • Druids
  • Favored Souls
  • Healers
  • Spirit Shamans
  • Shugenja
  • Paladins (if different from one or more of the above)
Possibly even non-wotc constructs such as:
  • Shamans (whichever you use)(oddly, I used both the Mongoose Shaman and the OA Shaman in my OA game. I made the Mongoose Shaman an "Animist" and made the OA Shaman more of a Bonze (Buddhist Priest))
  • Mage (from elements of magic)
  • Witch (whichever one you use)
  • Avatar (Green Ronin)
  • Holy/Unholy Warriors (Green Ronin)
  • (ETC)

Yeah, I know this is one of those "deep thought" threads that usually sinks to the bottom, but it would be cool if we could see how many existing divine class we could work into the same campaign setting with meshing yet distinct comsological driving forces.

One option is to have different magical traditions for different pantheons.

Perhaps the orcs are into spirit worship and have shamans.

Perhaps the humans worship a norse martial pantheon where they are destined to fight the dead in ragnarok, so they have armor and turning.

The elves are nature worshippers and have druids. Or call them Vanir worshippers instead of Aesir and Vanir worship involves druidism.

The dwarves are just ultra-lawful good and have paladins.

Meanwhile the foreigners over the way worship elemental forces and have shugenja.
