Difficult Player

In my opinion he hacked through the roof to entertain himself and the other players(not their characters) and because he didn't think that there would be consequences. When he was arrested he blamed the ruler of another town since that man had sent him to the city. This guy also believes that being Unaligned(Chaotic Neutral in previous editions) means you can stab innocent people on Tuesdays and make them hamburgers on Wednesdays. Not that I really want to get into a debate regarding Alignments because I only use one alignment. Chaotic Awesome.

Not incorrectly assumed. He was on a roof 2 stories up and had rope in his backpack and had already succeeded his Athletics check to get up on the roof from the room he was staying in. He hacked through the roof because he didn't want to fail his Athletics check and take 2d10 damage. Which is what he said when I asked if he was going to either use the rope or attempt to climb back into the room from the roof.

A Half-Orc Barbarian | Fighter is concerned about failing an Athletics check using a rope to climb down 2 stories? Is it even possible for that character to fail that check? I smell a fish, a rat, and some sort of hybrid ratfish.

Ahhhh...the "it's all about me, starring me!" player archetype. This person is motivated by making himself (not necessarily his character) the center of attention. It really doesn't matter what you do, how you resolve the current in-game issues, he will continue to make your game all about him if left unchecked.

How are the other players reacting to all of this? Is there any kind of peer pressure being exerted by the others? If they're laughing or in any way encouraging this behavior, it's going to be difficult to get him to stop.

Just be careful not to pin that label prematurely. I suspect that my character may look like that occasionally in our campaigns, when in fact I'm trying to do what I would like ALL of my fellow players to do: roleplay the details of their characters more. (Nutshell: Roleplaying is more than just "I'm Lawful Good so I have to rescue the slaves." It means acting out [to some degree] your character's ability scores, trained skills, class and background. For example, if you play an Int 8 character, you should damn well periodically say something truly obtuse. It doesn't need to be in a critical situation, but find a good moment and do it.)

Not that I want to start an alignment debate, but maybe if he thinks unaligned is "CN" then have him re-read the RAW concerning unaligned characters. Or look this over:

a nifty article from WOTC about alignment.

In our last campaign we had a player who had his characters do things like walk into the warehouse that we were staking out, in broad daylight, and then ask, "Could someone please point me to the leader of the secret society?" At one point he teleported onto the back of a huge animated statue, and rode it like a bucking bronco during combat.

Some players like to be unpredictable and entertaining. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it just seems stupid. They aren't necessarily trying to derail the game.

I must be recruiting wrong. All my players are human nerds (I think one's a hybrid geek). Dude's a half orc, what did you expect? They didn't have -2 Cha in 3E for nothing.
