Dimensional Grapple Escape ?

First Post
Can a victim use Dimension Door (spell or psionic version) and/or Dimensional Slide to escape from a grapple? Specifically a dragon snatch and carry in this case.

I know I'd have to make a pretty tough concentration check because of the damage inflicted. But the power doesn't make some sort of portal that you have to step through or anything, does it?

You must only make a simple concentration check to cast a spell in a grapple (see grapple rules). Only continual damage (like acid arrow) impedes your ability to cast spells. Even then it's only a penalty of half damage taken last round.
Dimension door works just fine since it has no somatic component and is a standard action spell. I think AD&D had Dimension Door be a portal to step through. Since 3.0 it's just a short range teleport.

Cast a Spell: You can attempt to cast a spell while grappling or even while pinned (see below), provided its casting time is no more than 1 standard action, it has no somatic component, and you have in hand any material components or focuses you might need. Any spell that requires precise and careful action is impossible to cast while grappling or being pinned. If the spell is one that you can cast while grappling, you must make a Concentration check (DC 20 + spell level) or lose the spell. You don’t have to make a successful grapple check to cast the spell.
EDIT: Added the reference from SRD. Not that simple to cast the spell.
Maxed out concentration means a bonus about 10+CON for a 7th level caster. Dimension Door is Level 4 that is you have to roll a 14-CON to succeed.

Well, I'd think clamped in dragon jaws would count as continuous damage, so the half damage would apply. But at least I have a chance before it drops me from 300 ft to go splat. :heh:

If your DM tells you grapple damage is continual damage then you have to make 2 concentration checks: 1 for pain DC10+1/2damage, 1 for restricted movement DC24.
Did I mention your chances to survive are quite small ? :heh:
Ah, if your DM is that mean he can enforce a third concentration check DC 15 for violent motion if the dragon is flying and shakes your poor body. ;)

You sure, I thought the 1/2 damage was added as an additional moddifier to the grappled concentration check? Two seperate checks would be much easier to succeed. Two 10-20's is more likely than one 19-20. WHOOT!!!

Yup, but at least there is a chance now.
