DirectX problem...

I've been trying to install DirectX 9 on my Windows ME system, but every time it gets done extracting and gets to the actual installation...the program itself crashes and nothing happens. I have no idea what would cause it to do that...though this computer is getting old.

Is it safe to assume you meet the system requirement for the software (processor, memory, video, sound, software drivers, etc.)?

Yep, it does. It basically gets all the way through extracting the files itself...then when it gets to the actual installation, a box pops up that says there's been an error in <unknown> then the window dies.

If you have encountered or are currently experiencing problems running other installations, you may have some bad RAM.

...that could be it knowing my luck. I KNOW it isn't my copy of DirectX, because I've downloaded it from 4 different sites with the exact same result...I have no idea how to fix this if my problem IS bad RAM...

If it is the RAM, your problems shouldn't be limited to DirectX, or at least, they won't be for very long. Regardless, the quickest way to find out would be to temporarily (and briefly) borrow a stick from a friend (even if he pulls it out of his own system), or buy a small, cheap stick for testing purposes.

Personally, I don't really trust any 'memtest' programs, as I've never had any luck identifying bad RAM with them.
