creamsteak, you can declare this totally non-canon if you want, but my currently recruiting vingette involves an abandoned sewer project well sealed off under the city of Orussus. It hides no sentient evil, but harbors a wide variety of vermin, non sentient undead and possible oozes to trouble a low level party out to clean house.

KB...you havn't been reading my mind have you? Cause I have a vignette that involves the sewers, vermin, and non-sentient undead. I've held off posting it because it seemed two adventure hooks were enough for right now. I was going to wait until the tavern had cleared out a little more. Would you shoot me an email thefirsttheonetheonly_dglass@yahoo.com It might be cool to compare notes and stuff. Perhaps the two parties might even meet each other?

I'm just wondering if it was ever officially ruled OK to play non PHB races, such as grey elf, goblin or orc. Nothing personal against any PCs currently of these races, but personally, I don't care for them. I'm a bit uncomfortable with orcs and goblins walking into the Inn like it was trip to wal-mart. In most worlds, such races wouldn't be allowed into town. If this was officially sanctioned at some point, then so be it. But if not, I'd like to have it run as a proposal and see what the community thinks.

This is a good point, though I don't see anything wrong with any of the sub-races from the PHB available in the MM.

For monster races ... well, there could be a monster town, as I see no reason why to not allow it. Trade would be possible, yet the same way monster races are frowned upon by 'normal' races, 'normal' races would be frowned upon in monster towns.

If I remember correctly, only sub-races from the SRD of the standard races that do not have LA were Ok'd (grey elves, or tallfellow halflings, for example). I don't think a final decision was made on any others.

I'm not sure what the ruling was. But when I saw that a grey elf character was approved, I assumed that it was okay to make a Deep Halfling.

For those who wonder: I deliberately only post to the proposals of the day, to avoid cluttering the board with proposals again. I would love to answer to all of them. :)

(Creamsteak, maybe we could try again to get a few subforums?)

I have to disagree, on two levels. One, I work under the assumption that the Red Dragon brings in a huge amount of Orurrus's income, and it has by default become an "adventurer's town." The availablitly of goods outside the normal range for its size, buy-a-wand stands and apparent world famous nature as a place to find troubleshooters all point to this, and I think in such a situation, any assumed societal strictures against 'lesser' races based on birth alone would be loosened. (In my first LEW adventure, the PCs took in a newborn ogre and placed it with the Society of Roadwardens to be raised as a force of good or at least benign neutrality. This is the kind of thing that happens when you have ahigh percentage of risk prone, strange people floating around...)

My other objection pretty much comes down to two words: Evil Characters. If we are going to talk about who should be let into town and sharing drinks in the Red Dragon, I'm more interested in discussing that evil cleric off to the paladin's left before worrying about if we have to hew to the the most narrow interpretations of fantasy stereotypes (and "mostly" or "usually" allignments). Evil characters were allowed on the basis that "people should be able to play the character they want," but as a DM, I'm more comfortable with a whole troop of neutral goblins in my PC pool than the potential for dealing with the neutral- or lawful-evil types we have lying around. Btw, there's an evil cleric of an evil diety potentially coming on my vingette and showing up for a job at the temple of Hyrag. Should I exclude the player from my adventure, somehow pretend this would be ok, or let in game reality takes its course? I do not forsee this kind of problem with well mannered members of the so-called savage races.

Anyway, just my two and a half cents, to sum up 1) this is the town which hosts the red dragon, not any old city that hasn't seen a half orc and wets itself at goblins, and 2) if the paladins have to play nice with the "Smite Me" sign wearers, we can metagame the acceptance of orcs who behave themselves.

Hello, Enworld

I am brand new to LEW. I just found it a couple of days ago. What an awesome idea! I am still trying to figure everything out. I have read through this thread (all umpteen pages) and now I am trying to get a sense of the geography and politics of the campaign world. Please be patient with me.

1) Question: I keep seeing references to a map: "Did you check out my map!" "Yeah, it was cool!" but I can't find a link to the actual map. Where is the map?

2) Question: I thought I read that SRD races (w/o level adjustments) were allowed. So I created a deep halfling, too. They are in the SRD (in the monster manual description of halflings) and they don't have a level adjustment. Is that OK? If the rule is "PHB only" then I will abide by that instead.

3) Newbie Opinion: The decision to use "SRD only" was pure genius. If you allow other resources, it will discourage prospective DMs. How can I DM someone who has classes, feats, etc from Complete Divine or Minis HB unless I own all that stuff myself? In a F2F game, you can pass around a sourcebook and share it. Not so on a PBP. By sticking to the SRD, you make sure that everyone has access to the same rules. Very smart.

4) Another Newbie Opinion: Since you are getting overwhelmed with proposals, I suggest that you place a ban on any rules-oriented proposals (Feats, PrCs, etc) and instead consider only those proposals that deal with actual in-game contest (Deities, cities, organizations, etc).

There are two maps in question... A world map, which is currently incomplete, and only a few of us have seen a rough draft. The second is a regional map of the areas around the city of Orussus. You can find an image of that map in the first post of the current Red Dragon Inn thread.

That should be fine.
