Disintigrate and Hide Life

What happens when someone with Hide Life is disintigrated? Do they "die" (i.e. reduced to 0 HPs and are staggered) or are they truly killed? Or are they now an (unfortunately) living pile of dust?

It is not a death effect, but a transmutation. So it would be the same as polymorphing them into a pile of living dust. So, yes, I agree with tleilaxu.

The best bet for the pile of dust would be a Silent Still Limited Wish. Emulate a Reincarnation and you have a brand new body.

Of course, you do lose a level, so you might wish to hang around for a True Res: if you ever get one.

It wouldn't work. The PC has to be dead to be a legal target for Reincarnation or True Resurrection.

I just had a look at the SRD for Disintegrate, it does not say that the creature struck is dead, but that it vanishes (in my eyes, that would mean "dead"). Seems to be arguable, but by the sense of the spell description, it's an insta-killer :(

Game-mechanics wise, Disintegrate reudces you to -10 hit points automatically. Along with this effect you are turned to dust. I personally wouldn't let half the spell work and half the spell not. If the target is not reduced to -10, then he is not reduced to dust. However, he would be staggered as the spell *tried* to disintegrate him and would be reduced to partial actions (as per the Hide Life description) -- that would be my thought anyway.

I do agree though if you cast a spell like Polymorph, you could render the target virtually helpless w/o damaging him.

Your current hit points do not change, but you do turn into a pile of dust. (The effect of the spell is to turn the target into a pile of dust; it doesn’t affect the target’s hit point total.)

Presumably, a pile of dust is blind, deaf, mute, and paralyzed, with no sensory apparatus of any kind.

I believe it will take a regenerate spell to restore your normal form, although a polymorph self/other or a shapechange spell could help you on a temporary basis.
