DM Reward Certs

This came up once on the Wizards forums, but I'm not able to find the thread.
I know the magic items you can get from a cert is not tradeable.

But do I have to create a brand new character to use it? Or can I apply it to an existing character. I'd like to be able to give it to the character I created during season 2 (and am only just now getting a chance to play).

You must create a new character of the correct story origin.

From the FAQ:
Can DMs put their Elemental Evil DM Reward (certificate) on a Tyranny of Dragons Character
No. In order to be eligable for a DM Reward Certificate, a character must be:
  • A starting character. That is, a character with 0 experience, and that has not been played in an adventure yet.
  • Created with the story origin identical to that of the DM reward certificate. An Elemental Evil character may receive the Elemental Evil DM reward certificate, but a Tyranny of Dragons character cannot.
If you gained the DM Reward certificate for Season 3 (the one with a grey bag of tricks), you would need to apply it to a new Rage of Demons character. You could not apply it to an existing character (of any story origin), nor could you apply it to a new ToD or EE character.

If you choose a magic item, it counts against your Magic Item Total for that character.

Thanks. I knew the last part (that it counts against the total) from conversations with others, but the way the certs read, the 'starting character' part was not clear to me. I'll peruse the FAQ for other stuff.

This seems like yet another way to make such rewards superfluous to those who DM for AL. I do quite a bit of AL DMing and finally had a chance to run a character a couple of weeks ago. However our store just got their AL support package this last week. This means I have to start another character to use this season's DM reward. And it counts toward that PC's Magic Item total. Why even bother giving these out?

You are not required to choose a magic item. The DM reward certificates also contain options for additional mundane gear (an option I used in season 2 to gain free breastplate armor). Only the magic item options (of which each certificate grants two choices) count against your total.
