I don't expect anyone to be able to make sense of these ramblings, nor do I expect anyone to agree.

The only rational part of the post.

But if you want to call me a troll for expressing a thought that runs counter to the mainstream, then you're just a tool and you're cordially invited to bugger yourself.

And if that was the reason your invitation would have merit.
But, being as the real reason was your sad attempt to substitute one dumb statement with a slightly less dumb statement, the quote is ultimately irrelevant to the actual exchange.

So now that you have completely struck out on the whole, talking in a consistent and logical manner thing, and there is clearly no reason to expect any improvement, welcome to the ignore list.

I think his point, one that I agree with, is players used to ask the DM for ways to make their character cool...even using stats to do it.

Player: Hey DM...my spellcaster really hates goblinoids, can his spells have a +2 DC against them?
DM: Sure, but since your focued on them, your spells are going to have a -1 DC against everything else.
Player: Alright.

But now its become....

Player: Oh sweet, a feat that lets me get +2 DC against goblinoids, but -1 against all other races. I'm taking that feat.

There's less and less a player and a dm using their imaginations and working to mold a character, and more just looking through feat lists and PRCs lists and just taking other people's ideas to enhance a character.

This I have also seen in games I play and run, and it is very sad.

Personally, I try to make liberal use of the DM's Friend whenever my players request it: the +2/-2 circumstance bonus. I wish they would think of reasons to use it more often though.

I notice a lot of people sounding like grumpy old men who wish things were as good as they were "back in my day..." Really, why do you continue with a hobby that you have come to dislike so intensely? I have a friend who I'm constantly asking why he even plays because all he ever does is complain about how much better things were in 2e. His answer boils down to "because I always have."

I think that kind of rut is far more sad than any supposedly uncreative trend in "n00b" gamers.

The moral of this story is, if you're ever in such a foul mood that you end up posting to message boards and sharing it around with everybody, you should reconsider your use of a web browser until the mood passes.

It's like posting while drunk. It's a stupid idea, so don't do it.

Cheers,
Cam

"The new Format was first introduced in Champions of Ruin. One of the few good points of that book."

There was far more good in Champions of Ruin than there was bad, IMHO.

Wow, this entire mess over Acidic Burst. :uhoh:

Have we really run out of things to complain about?

Quick, someone start a thread on the 'Anime-styled Art of 3.x,' 'Grim and Gritty Rules,' 'Low Magic vs High Magic vs,' 'X in WotC book Z is broken/underpowered/stupid/has a bad picture/looks kinda like Janet Reno!,' '2e vs 3e/3e vs 1e/2e vs 1e/3e vs Synnibar,' 'The unfortunately named Poke-Mount!,' '3.5 Destroyed my game and now I need to tell everyone about my dissatisfaction!,' 'Rangers Suck,' 'Bards Suck,' 'Half-Orcs suck,' 'Half-Elves suck,' 'Is the Mystic Theurge overpowered/underpowered/Janet Reno?,' 'WotC is raping my favorite setting and here's why, because everyone wants to hear my opinions!' etc. etc.

Those could spawn pages upon pages of textual sidestepping and WotC bashing! Let's get on it right now!

Seriously, I need a break from the internet and RPGing. The whining and complaining is just too much...

Back on topic: I hope this book is good. It looks like it could be a very good reference for both new and old DM's. Sample stat-blocks are the perfect way to help out everyone.

Good for you. For me, the book just doesn't do it. There are good points, but it was the first 3e FR book I'm not placing in the category of "great". The evil was too tame, the advice in there wasn't all that useful (in that it's stuff that is quite clear from the get go, instead of giving in-depth advice for DM to run evil campaigns), there were some really weird errors in the write-ups in the last two parts (NPC's and big bad guys), the elder evils were a joke, and the PrC's were, for the most part, not really that great.

Taking Lords of Darkness and the BoVD, you get quite neat evil support.

But we're drifting off-topic. Feel free to open a new topic about CoR (and give a link here) if you want to discuss it in-depth.
