OMG, I can't believe this is being dredged up again.
I don't know if you've ever been to a smithy, but none of the examples I've seen bear even a passing resemblance to an Ace Hardware store. If you've seen a medieval smithy with a showroom, please by all means share the details with us - I always like to learn new things.
I've been to multiple "medieval" smithies in Toledo, Spain. All of them fairly small.
They ALL had showrooms. Of course these smithies produced swords, daggers, and armor... which is unlike the typical medieval smithy, which produced horseshoes and plows.
It's not that hard to imagine though, assuming the blacksmith had two rooms in the building. Gee, what if you had a blacksmith who had TWO rooms rather than ONE room. Oooooh... What would he do with that other room?!?!?!
Come on, how many "actual" blacksmiths do you force upon your players? I can see it now:
Player: I want to go to a blacksmith so I can get some weapons and armor.
DM: Sorry the town blacksmith is a typical medieval blacksmith.
Player: What's that mean?
DM: It means he only sells crappy farm equipment. Nothing you want. Certainly not swords and spiked chains.
Player: Uh... okay, can I catch a caravan to somewhere else?
DM: Sorry. Typical medieval people rarely went further than a mile from home. You're on your own.
Player: Okay, I walk to the nearest city.
DM: Okay, you enter the city... Oops, you've caught the plague! Very common in medieval cities...
