Dnd Noob: Paladins with monsterous mounts?

Hi,

I'm not too well versed in Dnd, to be perfectly honest, so a few things still confuse me. For example, there's the mention of Paladins having exotic mounts. How does one go about acquiring one? I'm thinking that it's a good goal for one of my players in a game I'm GMing, but I don't know the first thing about the rules regarding exotic mounts.

Help, please?

Take a look in the DMG; all the rules for elephant-riding paladins are in the NPC's chapter, under Mounts.

Hmm... wait, are you referring to the 3.5 DMG? because I can't seem to find it here in the Characters chapter of 3.0. All I've found is the sidebar for animal companions for Rangers and druids.

I hope I'm not turning blind.

You are not (yet?? ) turning blind. The sidebar for the Paladin's mount in the 3.0 version is not found in the DMG but in the PHB at page 43. Don't ask me why. It does not detail how one gets one. From older editions (IIRC) the Paladin had to 'call' his horse and meditate until the mount magically came to him (would take up to 24 hours or so..), could be that this is just me remembering the way we played it, or could be 'official' 1st Edition rules...

In an old game I once had a player whose character was a sea elf paladin and his mount was a giant sea otter. Certainly raised a few eyebrows when the character arrived in the game.
