DnD: What is it to you?

Much like the title states I am curious what people feel it is that makes DnD well DnD. This is meant to be an inclusive discussion on what might be the strong aspects of the game are.
For me I think its things like spells per day and getting to use nearly every dice I own. Having to nurse a wizard to fruition like some delicate yet spectacular flower is another good one.

D&D to me is getting to envision and create a character that takes on a life of his own. I get to work with the character to help guide him... sometimes he does what I think is best, but other times this character has evolved enough that he has his own ideas of what he should do... and that's the best part... playing a game where your character, who you are "in control" of, can surprise you - take you places you were not expecting to go.

For me it's about getting envolved in a living story, interacting with characters and developing the character through the levels.

Not to mention that D&D when played with a good bunch of people leads to a good community and friendships.

Focusing on what D&D is to me and leaving out what role playing games in general are to me: D&D has a great history and community, so you find tons of material and help. You can get into contact with many people playing the same system. You have a lot of character options, because of so much materials. You may decide to take up your own world or use one of the existing worlds like forgotten realms with their rich description. And you may even chose the right edition to suit your play stile.

Mostly boring and repetitive.

Not to hijack the thread but basically I am the complete polar opposite of the type of gamer wayne62682 describes himself in his thread here.

Small group vs a Monster... Really if I want any other style of play there are many alternatives but D&D works really well in the specific scenario and I keep trying to use if for other things to.

Hey, I'm with you. I don't really like D&D much. Too combat focused, not enough characterization. I make a D&D character, (any edition) I feel like I have a very good idea of what they can do, but almost no idea of who they are.

D&D to me is long, tedious dungeon crawls, kitchen sink inconsistent settings, and rules that constrain imagination more than help it.

Exploring deep long forgotten ruins, standing up to the gods, foiling the plots of scheming villains. More importantly, spending time with friends and having fun.
