Do people who play non-D&D RPGs generally also play D&D?

Personal Story

I started playing Basic DnD and stayed with TSR games for some time - titles such as Star Frontiers, Gamma World, and Top Secret. I then branched out to Traveller, Twilight 2K, Car Wars and from there, GURPS.

I prefer "low concept" games since they have a lower barrier to entry, hence the absence of Vampire, Nobilis, and so on.

It seems to depend on when they started. Most people I know who started pre 1990 started with D&D, however after 1990 I know more who started on other systems and never played D&D.

I agree. This seems especially true for the White Wolf games.

This is perhaps not a good place to ask the question. This is primarily a D&D website. How many folks you expect to run into here who don't play some form of D&D?

I do know folks who play other games, and have never played D&D. I think WotC market research suggests that their numbers, while significant, are still not the majority of gamers. For whatever that's worth.

I started with D&D, then moved on to a lot of other systems, including a lot of homebrews. Nowadays I mostly run homebrew.

Two of my players have never played D&D, although one of them is now in my story hour (which is modified D&D). Of the two, one prefers rules-lite (which means no D&D, no WhiteWolf, no GURPS, etc.); the other just never liked the D&D magic system.

Most folks I know started with some flavor of D&D and branched out. The ones who didn't mostly began with Vampire and still primarily play WoD stuff.

I started with OD&D, but didn't start gaming seriously until 2e. Since then I've played all sorts of things, although I've always primarily played D&D.

My first love is D&D, which is how I first started my RPG hobby. Since then I played other games (MERP, Palladium Fantasy, WHFRP, Top Secret/SI, James Bond 007, Vampire, Werewolf, MechWarrior RPG, Robotech, Star Trek (FASA & LUG), etc.) ... but I always come back to my first love.
