The different halfling subgroup analogs in Tolkien don't particularly have any different stories that I know of. In D&D are the various types of halflings and gnomes almost miniature reflections of.humans, dwarves, and elves?

true but I like to know what already works so I can make something that fits in and is not too strong or too weak.
I'm not sure how a story can be strong or weak.

Do you mean "do separate cultures tell their own stories?" Then, the answer is yes, but you can detect overarching connecting themes. For further info, see: a degree Course in Anthropology.

Does it matter in a homebrew D&D setting? No, chances are it will never crop up.

Home brew world building is cool and fun, but as a writer it take time, work, error, rework, gameplay, to get better.
Put your ideas paper, share them, DM with them. Don’t start to big and let you space to rework everything.
