Do We Need any more d20 books?

I wish people wouldn't get so hung up on the want/need thing.

That's my fault for the thread. I was trying to focus on what mechanics the game engine itself could use as opposed to people wanting X, Y, or Z.

Can the game be played as is? To a point. You'd never be able to do an 'official' divine ascension for example, or detailed rules for merchant trading and dealing.

I realize that this may sound heretical, given that this is a d20 fan site, but have you checked out GURPS Egypt? In my experience, GURPS worldbooks are very well written and researched. You could probably get a wealth of information from it, even if you don't like or use the GURPS system.

I don't consider this heretical in the slightest, mainly because I own about a dozen GURPS supplements. The problem is that I have been unable to find (at a half-way reasonable price, such as cover price or less) three such supplements -- GURPS Egypt, GURPS Greece, and GURPS Aztecs.

If I could find it, I would be quite happy :)

I rather liked the old ICE/Hero Mythic Egypt book, and used it for a killer game back in the day.

I have strongly considered hunting up a new copy.

I guess I'm lucky I bought GURPS Greece quite recently at the local gameshop. I just checked some Internet order sites and they are all out of stock. You could ask your local gameshop if he can can order those books somewhere else.

The RPG items I want/need are:
IK World Book
IK Liber Mechanika
Ravenloft: Families of Blood

I need more d20 (or and RPG) books like I need more Legos :D .

Sure I could make what I want out of the tool/parts that I currently have, but sometimes a new set has just the right tool/part I need to create a better version of what I have.

The "need to be entertained" is just as valid a need as food and shelter. Though differening importance depending on the satisfaction of lower needs. However, it is a personal question/choice on how an indvidual meets the "need for entertainment."

So I don't think it is valid to ask the global question of "Do we need more d20 Books?" Obviously there is a need since Wizards and other companies are still making them and people are buying them. In other words, there is still a market for d20 Products. It is up to the individual to determine their own personaly utility for any d20 product.

Need? Nothing. I have everything I'll ever need. I may have to go to an earlier edition to find it (World Builder's Guidebook), but everything I could need for a D&D game exists.

Want? Oh, yeah.

I want Bastion Press to get all the domains of Oathbound designed and released.

I want Goodman Games and Necromancer Games to keep doing what they're doing.

I want Fiery Dragon to keep making useful products that don't include prestige classes! :p

I want deluxe box sets, and I don't mind paying $100 for them. (Well, I'll end up paying $70 at amazon anyway ;) )

I want Mike Mearls to be my DM. (Is there anything regarding d20 this guy hasn't written?)

I want the Planescape team back together doing Planescape. (Beyond Countless Doorways is undoubtedly a good first step, but I want more.)

I want an extra 6 hours per week added to my life so that I can actually spend time gaming.

I want JoeGKushner to stop starting threads like this and get to finishing his review on the World's Largest Dungeon. :)

Well, Alan (Psion's) review will be here. My review will be in d20 Filtered, another magazine altogether. AEG didn't mail me a review copy. :(

WotC's Primal Order and x-Order books

I need some books like the old Capsystem promised when WoTC was first doing RPGs before Magic the Gahtering took over.

Joe, I had no idea you were a fan of these wondrous books :D They were great, and offered a lot of inspiration for my personal games. I continue to hope that Peter's going to bring them back into print, or that he's going to d20 them or at least let someone else do so!

We still have no good system for creating gods, especially elevating characters to gods. Heck, I'm still using bits from the Primal order. I'd like for some official product to handle this, but I am looking forward to the Classic Play book by Mongoose.

Which title, for those of us who don't regularly track Mongoose releases?

We have no book on merchants, marketing or economoics. This was supposed to be one of the next books in the Capsystem line after they did a Primal Order sourcebook on the Norse Pantheon, among others.

Doesn't Experts cover some of this ground???

How about you?

As Joe and many other posters have indicated, d20 books are not required, they're just nice. That said, I'd be interested in publishing something like the Primal Order: Chessboards book combined with the planes chapter from TPO---a book that explores the nitty gritty of building planes, planar systems, conjunctions of the million spheres, etc. from the ground up. The 3e MotP is a stab in the right direction, but isn't enough of a planar toolkit for my tastes....

Well, I about caused coronaries at a meeting of publishers when I stated:

We need them (you guys) more than they need US (the publishers). All they need is the three core books, so we kind of need to understand what they want, not keep shoving the same crap down thier throats and all pull in different directions and put out 20 books all the same.

It caused a total crap fest.

It's true, sadly.

BUT, what I believe is needed is 3rd Party support for d20 Modern and d20 Future, and later on, d20 Past. And d20 Fantasy books never hurt anyone. Sometimes you like one persons take on a subject better than others.

But eh, what do I know.
