I used to paint minis and actually became moderately good at it, but life has gotten in the way of that kind of endeavor. I collect the plastics now, and every now and then, I might touch up or embellish one of those plastic ones... otherwise I don't really paint anymore.

I think minis are an enormous asset when running combat in games. That said, I just can't afford 'em. I'd get more, but right now almost everyone I know has a truckload.

Nope. Minis are fun. Minis are helpful. But, minis are more like a secondary effect of RPGs. It's the same as how I really enjoy full-on wargames (like Johnny Reb), and there is an obvious connection through Chainmail, but it's not the same hobby.

I used to buy and paint GW, but lately I just pick up Reaper minis and paint them when we start a new campaign or what have you. I got pretty good at it, really. I never entered any competitions, but I felt like my miniatures could have been in them without being too embarassed.

I love minis. The first time I actually used them in a game, it was like an amazing epiphany - suddenly, my players couldn't argue about where they were actually standing, vs. where their foes were actually standing, in combat situations. Later, when I started painting minis, I found that a particularly good paint job would help inspire my characterization of an NPC, spark my imagination about an organization or group in the game world, etc. In RL terms, painting is a relaxing hobby that I can do while watching TV, chatting with my wife, or really doing anything that does not require the use of my hands.

I'm not a huge fan of prepainted minis, but I don't think there's anything wrong with them.

for me, they are more a part of my gameing hobby then the gameing itself. I greatly enjoy painting them myself, though I am not yet as good as I want to be
