Miniatures require money and storage space (and, in the case of unpainted minis, time) that their utility at the table doesn't really justify. I think the future is in printing out art (from absolutely anywhere) and fitting it into some kind of reusable token. I'm trying it with little glass disks right now, but there are definitely other good methods.

I view tokens as a boon for the unfortunate souls not blessed with a plentiful supply of pewter or plastic. There are a bunch of counters made with video game sprites in this thread...
