It is just as important to have good players to contrast a good Game Master. Players that are disruptive can be an extreme burden on a game, but players that are extremely helpful or interested in the game for any number of reasons can make a great GM out of a mediocre one.

I consider myself an excellent player because of my time spent as a DM. I take many duties upon myself to lighten the workload of the game master, for example: mapping. I also try to be as consise as possible, setting an example for other players. I will always have my DMG and Players Handbook with me at any session so that I can look up rules without bogging down combat or asking questions of the DM. I'm quick to make decisions, or to get one from my allies to do the same instead of entering into lengthy debates. I'm also tactful with any metagaming thoughts: I try to a heavy degree to forget everything I know about the game (damage reduction, trolls regeneration, etc), but I am always telling the GM my opinion. Lastly, I take the initiative myself. I don't wait for something to come to me, from the first session on -my character has some place to go, some person to visit, and something to do, but I'm willing to take a back-seat to other players and the GM while remembering to go about my own goals.

I'm a good PC. I try to help the DM out by keeping action going and supporting good role playing.

Ditto...and I don't act like a jerk around the table. It's a game and we spend just as much time shooting the breeze as we do playing.

Sorry. :)

Broken Fang, please don't use profanity - even the faked kind! Anything that would offend Eric or Morrus' grandmother we try to avoid here. I'd appreciate it if you'd edit your post accordingly.

Thanks -

Just so you know, I'm not naive: I'm betting that most everyone votes YES on this particular poll. I doubt it is common for a player (unless we're talking about a DM that has trouble adjusting to beign a player) to think that he/she is doing a bad job...

Right you are. We're all top notch :). In the end, it all depends on your personal goal of the game. Maybe, it's causing the DM's nervous breakdown that defines a good game for you ;).

what constitutes a bad player vs. a good player? I voted good because I have learned from bad experiences when I first started a few years ago, and my first experiences as a DM went very ummm, I shall say bad but it was worse than that.

I can come up with a number of reasons why I consider myself a good player and maybe why someone else could be a bad player, but that's because of my style of gaming, whereas that other person could think the same thing about me (I had this happen a year ago, he was totally into hack/slash, I am not) and we ended up in different games.

I guess the point is, what's a good player and what's a bad player really?

I would like to think that I am. Alot of times it depends on who is running the game or what game we are playing. I'd like to find a game with people who I haven't played with yet and see how they play and change or adapt how I play. I'd love to expand my horizons.

Re

I work with the DM to make the game interesting. What do I mean by this? I don't sit and wait for the DM to club me over the head with an obvious encounter. I actually interact with the DM to make the game more interesting. For example, I always request that the DM tell me about the surroundings. I like to know what kind of objects are in the room and what kind of cover I can obtain. You never know when you may need use a table for cover or use a torn tapestry or blanket to tie someone up.

That is probably the main reason why I am a good player.

I am a good player in the context of the group I play with now. Our styles match well. That doesn't necessarily mean I would fit in with just any group.
