The feat survivor thread brought this up to me. I haven't used an item creation feat that I can recall, and certainly it's been rare in my games. I don't like paying XP.

How about everyone else?

I picked all the time even though that implies all my characters are level -3. But the middle option was a bit too low in frequency for me. My PC is 1700 xp below party norm at the moment. She was alone in this until the sorcerer chose limited wish as his first 7th level spell. He's now 2000 xp below party norm....
 

I haven't played a wizard to the point where I've had the opportunity to use them much, but the way I see it one XP spent on items buys 12.5 gp worth of items. That's a pretty good investment. I'd be a little more wary about making items for the rest of the party - I'd definitely not do it at cost (except maybe healing items), but I'd give them a discount compared to the item's market price.
 

Ya, I had a Ranger with craft Wonderious items. That was a great investment for the character. I made items for everyone in the group. Nothing powerful, but so many great utility items.
 

There's not really an option for me on the poll.

Item Creation Feats ROCK! They are so cool that they are probably close to, although not quite, being broken. A spell caster can outfit his party with the most useful items in the game for a pittance in XP and some gold. Take Craft Wondrous Item and Magical Artisan and your character will crank out nearly every magical item that your party could ever need. You could effectively double your character's equipment value with time, a small amount of XP, and some gold. To make it all that much better, the game is built to let characters that are lower level than their peers to catch up, a system which more than makes up for the XP one burns to craft. I have considered disallowing them because it yanks control of the distribution of magic from the DM. Later!
 

I don't get to play much as a player, but every character that I have created for the purpose of playing has had at least one item creation feat. I love them.

Seldom, but they're used. Especially CWI. (Potions and scrolls are less popular. Players don't want to expend their XP in temporary things.)
 

Scrolls, potions, occasional wand. For the more powerfull stuff I use the power component option, this allows me some control over overproducing PCs. Actually one of my players have all the PHB(3.0) item creation feats. His goal was to retire the PC as magic school dean.
BAck on topic:SInce I play in "low(er)-magic" world the ability to create/customize magic items is more than just conviniance-it borders nessesity. Most (90%+) of the "magic shops" sell only spell components and items up to 2000-4000gp. You cannot just order an item and pick it up latter, you need to either echange it for LARGE (2 to 4 times regular) ammont of gold, swap it for another, take it from your vanguished foe, make it yourself or make contract with some very powerful individul-be it archmage, demon, angel or god(the last ussualy cost one most, even if not imediatly apperant). Some may find this too restrictive, but it works for us. [Just a side note, I started that camaign in 98, swiched from 2nd to 3rd in 2000. 2ed item creation still influence the way I am playing/DMing.)
