To those who play characters almost exclusively as one race. What race do you play and why?

I prefer elf because when I start a character, I plan to take that character as far as possible. That includes but is not limited to: spouse, children/descendants/dynasty, future effect on the game world, etc. I do this mostly because I'm one of those guys who can't help but commit. When I create a character, I create a person, and take him as far as possible. The best race for this is of course, the elf. Extremely long lifespan, besides all the of traits of the elven race that I just love.

See Jeremy? Cute female D&Ders. They do exist(in other words, Toni, Roxanne, and Christine aren't the rule).

As for the question, I'm your DM. I play everything. Although lately, I've been NPCing mostly elves.

I almost exclusively play humsn. I've had five d20 characters, 3 human, one half elf, and one Ooze Gensai (I had a theme going with him). The extra skill points and feat is great for the versatility of these bonuses.

I find it interesting that I only play humans, while Dragongirl never plays them, for approximately the same reason. The only difference is the fact that I approach non-humans as crutches for roleplaying. Essentially, I think my playing an elf or a dwarf would take half the fun out of playing a character because a portion of my creative process would have been done. "My character is an elf, so part of his personality is already hardcoded in..."

Of course, this isn't the case in any objective sense, but in my subjective perception, I can make a more interesting character out of a human than I could out of an elf, dwarf, or gnome. The basic reason is because a human is more of a blank slate than any other non-human. In my experience, characters react to the racial makeup of a character if they're perceived to have any racial makeup at all... A human, generally speaking, might not have a racial identity whereas an elf has all the baggage -- true or not -- that comes with being an elf.

I'm assuming a lot with these lines, but of course, everyone's D&D reality is quite unique -- and dare I say subjective?

*shrug* Something to think about, I guess, heh,
