I not only miss the class names, but the old 1E level names. "25 more xps and I'm an Acolyte!! Whoopie!"

I like the level names. I think they would be cool to add to 3.x at some point. Sure, they don't serve a 'mechanical' purpose, but does everything have to be about crunch?

Yes. It's part of the OGL. In order for anyone, including Wizards of the Coast, to produce D&D/d20 material they are required by the terms of the license to focus on rules to the detriment of flavor. ;)

Level titles worked for clerics, because they described a hierarchical structure.

They did not work for magic-users. Here are the level titles for the MU:
Prestidigitator
Evoker
Conjurer
Theurgist
Thauumaturgist
Magician
Enchanter
Warlock
Sorcerer
Necromancer
Wizard
Mage
Arch-Mage

Now, how many of those titles are currently being used in 3E? (I count at least 8).

Cheers!

I miss them out of nostalgia but not out of practicality.

Out of practicality I miss the 2E method of dealing with it. Four basic classes (Warrior, Rogue, Priest & Mage) with everything else becoming a subclass. I would have loved for a nice 3E mechanical rendition of that philosophy...

PS - A Wizard should be a high level mage not a low level flunky. ;)

I agree with John Q.; I miss the level names (some of them) but not the actual class names too much. I do disagree with the difference between Warrior and Fighter. "Warrior" implies someone who is a professional warrior, whether soldier, mercenary, adventurer, or what not. "Fighter" implies more of an undisciplines irregular, a thug. Just my 2 bent coppers worth.

and a practical way to apply them to a 3.5 world, it would be very cool.

As said above, they probably work best as ranks within an organization--though YMMV, and the Lawful Evil "Grand Master Of Flowers" is a bit odd, unless of course they're those nasty black lotus thingies... :\
