Am I a "whale? I'm a guy with a small fortune invested in miniatures and terrain, including Dwarven Forge. But I think of whales as folks who are kind of suckered into making bad bets or investments. I don't think hardcore hobbyists are necessarily the same thing, though there can be overlap, for sure.
Huh. I've never thought of "whale" as being derogatory to the whale. I certainly don't think of my customers who I think of as "whales" as being suckers, I think of them as being AWESOME.

And it has very little to do with them being rich (or not) - it's just where they choose to spend their money! I have "whales" that have high-paying jobs, but I also have "whales" that clearly just enjoy spending a large part of their leisure money on the sort of things that I sell (Comics and Games).

Unless the basic set is all of what you can get in the core 2024 books, people aren't likely to ease into play using it when they have the full 2014 version on hand that works perfectly well.
They will if they prefer it, which was the point of all that market testing.

Also, where is it said that the majority of players(the average player) are in high school?
I have to agree. I run a lot of AL here in Florida (2x/week) and the players tend to be either really young (elementary to middle school) maybe with nerd parents or old enough to drink. At least in this part of the state* kids in high school need a certain number of hours doing volunteer stuff somewhere, I imagine that influences the gap. High schoolers seem to be more numerous on mtg night just going by eyeball on the times I passed by on that night.

*Might be county level thing, might be statewide. Not having kids I've never looked into it.

It makes more sense with "free to play" games where a Whale can unload some excess cash at the Pay to Win shop and not only annoy people who have invested hard work into the game, but possibly warp some aspects of the game out of shape (PvP content, for example).

AFAIK the term "Whale" comes from Casinos, where it's definitely not meant to insult them. Even if, in that case, they usually are rich words that I can't say on ENWorld.

Wow, we really are doing all the greatest hits in this thread. We've had low grade edition warring, complained about 5e mechanics, talked about player entitlement, and now we've shifted onto RPG's are Expensive.

You guys really are doing all the greatest hits. Need some Damage on a Miss stuff and a bit of OSR kerfuffle and we can complete the set. Did we talk about the OGL yet? It's been a long thread, so, I imagine so. I know, let's add in an alignment discussion and a genre examination. Haven't done those in a while.

Are people still seriously banging on the idea that RPG's are expensive? Look, I get the notion that RPG gaming should be as widely available as it can be, but, holy crap. You are very hard pressed to find a cheaper hobby than RPG gaming. I actually priced it out a while back. You can buy the ENTIRE 5e library, ten years worth of publications, for about 2000 bucks. That's paying full price for EVERYTHING. No discounts.

About the only way this hobby gets expensive is if you get into minis. Books? Pen and Paper gaming? It couldn't possibly be cheaper.

Revising my original post way back when. I run DCC almost exclusively but I do plan to but the revised books and will see from there. Still most likely sticking to base 5e if I ever get back to D&D.

The highly improbable happens on rare occasions (otherwise they wouldn't be highly improbable), but when it happens repeatedly it is no longer improbable. It's automatic and guaranteed. It's fine that it doesn't bother you, all we ask is that you accept that it's an issue with some people.
The chances of any particular event taking place are pretty slim, so I’m not sure what you’re choosing to call “highly improbable”. Also, no one said anything about “repeatedly”. I accept these are issues for you, but that doesn’t indicate something wrong with the 2014 PHB background features. The background features don't say highly improbable events happen repeatedly.

Again, I disagree. A sailor that can always, guaranteed, find a buddy wherever they are is improbable to the point of impossible.

I'm not arguing about what my opinion is any more.

Terrain (e.g. Dwarven Forge etc.) can also get very expensive in a hurry if you let it, as can collecting historical pieces e.g. TSR-era modules, books, accessories etc.
