Do you play more for the story or the combat?

Story.

I play (and DM) games for the Story. Combat is definitely part of that story from time to time, but if I had to do without one, the choice would be easy for me. Otherwise, I would just play the mini's game.

Now of course most games have a good share of both, so it's not that black and white, but you get the idea.
 

I voted for story, but that misrepresents my position. Alas, there were no other options on the poll. I think I would say that I particularly enjoy the 'simulation' aspect of D&D. This is especially the case when I DM. Before anybody tells me that I should pick another game (which for some reason seems to be repeated relatively often on these boards), I will state that I like the fantasy/D&D tropes included in D&D, such as intelligent spellcasting Dragons, the races such as Elves and Dwarves, and so on and so on.

Emphasis mine. I think this may be why people have recommended other games for simulation. A game isn't actually simulating anything when it defines its own tropes. Many (I would even venture to say most) D&D-isms as portrayed in D&D are, largely, unique to D&D and D&D-derived works.
 

It's great if you already have something in mind (it gets out of the way and lets you do it!) but if you're looking to the system for inspiration, you don't so much find it.

Maybe. I find that building an effective mixed team of monsters will provide some inspiration via the need to justify weird combinations.

I think that translates as Story > Combat (if only mildly)
 

Say Psion where is that test (assuming you got those scores from a online quiz), be interesting to see if what I view as my gaming style matches with the numbers.
 

I put everything I have into the stories I write for my players to enjoy. If my games all boiled down to how good or bad a combat was, I'd feel defeated and give up the game.
Story is definately the most important part of my games.

However, in my case, it's:
Tactician 100%/Power Gamer 100%/Butt-Kicker 92%/Specialist 67%/Storyteller 67%/Casual Gamer 58%/Method Actor 50%

I play primarily for the experience of overcoming challenges vicariously through my PC, including, but not limited to, combat. Story is a bonus.

It might.

Every time I try to put together an encounter I get frustrated about halfway through, go "screw it," and just put in monsters I think will be cool.

Let the PC's worry about reacting to it! I've got bigger things to worry about then scouring the MM for a suitable Level 2 Elite Brute I can use in this adventure!
 

For me it's both, and adventure, and cooperative play.

I'm pretty competitive, but not when I want to adventure.

I rpg to play. I also think 'story' is a loaded term with some connotations that don't fit at all what I mean by it.
