Do you roleplay in 1st or 3rd person - why?

Our whole group tends to play in 1st person, while the DM tends to do thrid person. None of us ever really thought about it; that's the way it just seems to happen.

Well, we play in mostly first person and that is how I like and tend to enforce that with folks who don't who join the group. . . However, on the other side of the coin it makes me uncomfortable when outside of the actual game context people talk about their character's adventures in the first person. . . It is a weird little issue, because I have no problem with people saying "and then we went down into the dungeon" in reference to a whole party - but when they say "and then I killed the goblin and took his money" it creeps me out b/c there is a little too much identification with the character.

Makes the most sense. The players are only one character each, so when they say "I", it's clear who they mean.

But the DM is everyone else, so "I" is nonsensical.

Of course, the NPCs the DM refers to in the third person generally refer to themselves in the first person...

Hmmmmm! I think next time I play, I'm gonna try doing it in the second person.

Too many Pick-a-Path books as a kid? :)

As a player, I do both. As a DM, I do both. I'm just sloppy I guess... er, Nifft means flexible. Not sloppy. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Face to face generally first person

"I go up and hit him on the shoulder 'Hey how ya doin?' "

In e-mail and pbp I'm usually 3rd person

"Kyron goes up and hits the foul thing 'Die foul beast' he cries as he slashes."

It is a little easier to keep track on e-mail if characters are labelled as more than I or you.

LIke Scribble...

We do a lot of first-person roleplaying, which we consider an integral part of the game. But for pacing, variety, etc. we do mix it up. Sometimes I will switch into third-person if I feel an encounter is getting bogged down or if I notice other players getting anxious.

Usually 1st person but like others I switch to 3rd person to speed things up tho occasionally so I can remain in my comfort zone.

However there was my halfling monk that spoke in 3rd person (watched too much of the Rock) and had the most -electrifying- move in gaming today, the Halfling Elbow and had millions (and millions) of fans, all chanting the Monk's name (Monk-y, Monk-y)... er, nevermind. However with all those ranks, he could climb like he was at least part monkey.
