Do you think Eberron will go the way of Ghostwalk?

I believe what annoyed a lot of people about the book (it certainly annoyed me) was that it used 3.0 rules and was released at about the same time as 3.5e.

It was released before 3.5 and WotC was sitting on it for some time, which leads one to believe they released it when they did to fill a gap in the schedule and so they wouldn't have to update it in order to publish it.

I doubt Eberron will go that way... it is a whole campaign setting.

Ghostwalk was more of a whole different way to play - one with far less appeal than just it being another campaign world.

No, Eberron is going to stick around at least as long as Dragonlance because it isn't as out there and different from D&D as say a Dark Sun game or chunked down like Birthright was. Don't get me wrong, I like both settings and DS is a WAY cool concept, but Eberron is closer to DnD and yet still recognizable as DnD which will give it staying power probably more akin to FR than DL.

DL isn't as versatile as FR and Eberron looks to be as versatile as FR and yet different enough to have its own identity.

Ghostwalk is a different creature altogether though. It was meant to be one off as others have mentioned BUT it IS a complete setting, sorry to disappoint you folks. The "option" aspect seems to be tacked on as an afterthought so as to not have to provide a lot of support and make it so you can support it with other setting material more easily. I liken Ghostwalk to Dark SUn. A nice quirky setting but lacking a versatility that other more popular settings provide. I would do a campaign there, with very quick advancement but not a campaign like a great FR campaign that goes on for a year or two, possibly more, with well developed PCs. Ghostwalk=Movie, FR=T.V. Series.

The big question is how will FR fans like the new setting? If they embrace it, Eberron will certainly be a success.
To many, it is just another campaign setting published by WotC. Others will probably feel threatened if FR get bumped down the priority list.

I wonder if WotC will be willing to give full support to two settings. (I'm sure they *can*, I just wonder if they will want to, financially.)

It will be interesting to watch the whole thing develop.
Well, considering that they change their business structure to utilize more freelanced writers (which is prudent considering the shrinking list of WotC's R&D employees), it shouldn't be too much of a problem, just as long as they listen to the majority of their customers.

Ghostwalk as an option

Funny - I wasn't too excited about Ghostwalk either when I first saw it announced, but at last year's GenCon, I played in the scenario featuring the book. I was sold. I finally purchased the book and I am using it as an alternative to raise dead and ressurection.

Read carefully, this IS AN OPTIONS book. Manifest is something you can easily insert into PART of a city as a ward, district or even as scattered locations, such as alleys, warehouses etc. Heck - I don't even use locations like that as common fare - to find one is indeed an accomplishment for a ghost PC.

So how do I use the book and the rules in it? That's easy. A PC cannot effectively be raised from the dead or ressurected until two things happen. First, some quest must be fulfilled. It might be as simple as hunting down and slaying the killer or finding and recovering your body, or as complex as harvesting the scattered parts of your soul into a gem to be used as a component during the ressurection casting. Second, a character can only be raised from the dead in the same location as which they were killed, or at least near it - e.g. who'd want to stand in the lava pit to raise your dead rogue??! The cave in which the lava pit is located is good enough.

Whatever the case is, using these rules makes getting the character back challenging and rewarding for the player. No longer can their party members just walk around the corner to their local church and have ressurection cast in exchange for a few thousand coins. They and the dead PC have to work for it. If they succeed, the dead PC is alive and rewarded, getting to keep the XP they gained while working towards living once again.

All in all a pretty good proposition and it makes for some interesting RP and adventures.

Sure Ghostwalk was a one off, but used creatively, this suppliment is very handy to make the game more rewarding for all.

As for Eberron, well, I'm not sold. Time will tell.

the actuall setting may be well and fine, but not unlike as noted ghostwalk
the real templates, planes,NPC's that are within will have to be very good,or it'll fade into forgotton dust, like any borring campaign world

i think the name is rather mundane, but with an entire book, one has to allow for the cliche 'never judge a book by it's cover'

With GH, FR, Ravenloft, Wilderlands, Midnight, Oathbound, Dungeonworld, and Harn I don't need or want another campaign world. I have problems using the ones I do have, and it isn't because i don't want to either.

You may not want another campaign world, but there are gamers that are not fans of GH, FR, Ravenloft, Dragonlance, Kalamar, Rokugan, Theah, Wilderlands, Midnight, Oathbound, Dungeonworld, Dawnforge, Harn ... etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

But at least we have a wide variety of options in the market. ;)

I honestly don't know. To tell the truth there are in my opinion almost too many campaign settings out there and they just aren't different enough from each other in my opinion. Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Scarred Lands, and Kalamar all seem to have the same feel to me. I've switched up entirely and am getting ready to start a Midnight campaign because for once I want the PCs and the forces of good to be the underdogs. In each of the settings I've listed there are far more powerful NPCs who can swoop down and save the day if things get too hairy for the PCs (Elminster in FR, Mordenkainen in GH, etc). In Midnight there is nobody to save the day, those who could have already been killed. :]

I'll take a look when it comes out, until then it will be hard to say. :)
