They should reboot it from the beginning, at the time of Netheril's start.
That's a good idea too.

Just go ahead and disconinue the setting, making something new.

Sure, that's what they're doing, but they're calling the new setting "Forgotten Realms", which is confusing.
Maybe they fear diluting the fanbase if they have more then two settings going. Don't know.

Nothing bad, I hope. I don't play in Eberron, but I hope at least those guys will be spared.

I agree with this sentiment. I don't play in Eberron, but there are changes to it which would make it more appealing to me. Like removing Warforged, making magic more magical etc. But that would firstly annoy those people who DO play in Eberron, and remove a lot of the flavour of the setting. I'd hate to see fellow gamers lose out due to silly, unneeded changes.

I think it would be optimal that if you make a new edition of the game, have a fresh and new campaign setting or settings for it. Retire greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, and Eberron. They are all designed and balanced for earlier editions. Keep them there.

They can't retire FR, they make too much money from the novel line. I'm sure if the game products don't sell as well we'll see fewer products, but they'll keep hold of the line.

IMO that shark was jumped when they made Elminster a wild talent psionic/fighter/thief/cleric/magic-user with chosen powers and spellfire. :\

Elminster = Samuel Haight.
(I know Elminster predates him but...)

Say no to reboots. I hate'em. Except in the case of DC's original Crisis and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and maybe Clives Barkers new Hellraiser. But NO Forgotten Realms Reboot, unless you give Ed full control of the setting!

I think the re-boot is needed. Maybe it's going too far, but it seems like it's actually undoing some of the previous re-boots/RSEs that proved unpopular. Mystra dying is, IMO, the single best change the Realms will undergo. It doesn't just fix the Times of Trouble mess, it also kills off an overly interventionist deity whose portfolio should always have been hands-off.

I wouldn't be 100% opposed to an Eberron re-boot for 4e, but I don't want there to be any passage of time. (In other words, any re-boot would actually be a retcon.)

This isn't a reboot. It isn't even that drastic a change. Unless you have a campaign in Luskan or heavy involvement of Helm's or Mystra's church the changes are minor.
Thay is getting a civil war and the Spellplague. It will tie them up a bit but I see a reunited Thay fighting Mulhorand. Thayan conclaves now are needed to generate funds for the war effort.
Sembia has a shade problem. The changes in Sembia started 5 years ago with the start of the Stormweather books, at least Erevis Cale is an entertaining protagonist. This change was foretold.
The consolidation of a lot of the lesser gods and pantheons makes sense. This is the heaviest price to pay. There are so many gods that there have to be some fans for most of them. Most however are redundant and in an active divine court redundancy is competition. How WotC handles the consolidation will be interesting.
But, for the most part, Waterdeep will be Waterdeep, Cormyr will be Cormyr and Realms will keep on keeping on. Change is the price of a vibrant multi media setting like the Realms.

Oh dear!

I wished I read the other thread first.

I chose that it would make sense to make a fresh start but after reading that other thread about what they actually did well lets say even I'm appalled.

I don't mind setting it a century ahead and just develop it but insuring the entire setting is complete b******s in the process?

I mean come on!
No matter how I feel didn't those idiots even bother checking the reaction of the their target audience before pulling this!
Well if their intro for 4e was considered a disaster this is FAR worse!

God what the heck do they have planned for Eberron? If this is what they're going to do to the Forgotten Realms... will they even be an unsullied campaign setting left? Perhaps Greyhawk was the lucky one... at least they're not going to even try there!

As I have said before, if FR was kicked back two or three rungs on the power curve, I might be interested.

It has got to be the worst campaign world ever for convulted ways the designers try to keep powerful NPCS from doing the low level character's jobs for them.

Yes I am very interested in a simplified REALMS. I got burned out on the REALMS. :( Now I am waiting with baited breath for the next campain setting book. :D I mean half of whats being changed I really dont use anyway. So the REALMS are being made smaller, in a sense cool. If what I heard that the next campain setting bookis going to be all fluff I WILL BE REALLY EXCITED. I got tired of regional feats, circle magic, shadow weave, & 3000 gods. I am glad that the REALMS ARE GETTING A HAIRCUT SO TO SPEAK!
