I love using miniatures (and pretty flip-mat maps, too) in D&D, both for the combat mini-game and for positioning, marching order, etc. It solves a lot of "but I was out of range of that fireball" arguments.
I should note that I only use miniatures when playing D&D. With other RPGs with less tactical focus, I usually don't bother or just draw the odd sketch map.
