I voted prepainted since that is mainly what I use these days but I do a lot of assembling and painting of metal and other plastic minis. I even sometimes repaint existing prepaints to better fit my camapaign.

before having a computer, I tried tokens but they were too limited for me.

I do both, too...

Predominantly I buy pre-painted D&D minis, but I still do buy and paint plenty of Warhammer minis (although I've bought them less and less lately - that pile of "to paint" is just too dern big...) :p

In voted 'pre-painted' because that's what we're using now; it changes. Right now, with Mutants and Masterminds, it's cool using various Heroclix since it's unlikely that we'll have that many people on the field at any one time.

For Fanasy, I prefer the Firey Dragon counters because they have the exact creatures I need in the numbers I need; it's easier for me to carry and lay down 50 golblin counters than keep, store, place and hunt for 50 goblin mini's even if they are all $0.25 prepainted plastic goblins.

For some games, we hardly bother using minis. Other times, we all look like a bunch of engineering students as we lpace things exactly :)

This thread brought an old memory for me. Back in my Warhammer RPG days I had a large group of players (about 8) that I went out of my way to find a appropriate miniature for. Everyone was pretty happy with theirs so I decided to try and introduce a re-occuring villian with a special mini (an Orc champion from the table top game).

It worked prefectly - I managed to have him attack the party and flee 3 times over a course of maybe 15-20 game sessions before they finally tracked him down and killed him and his little dog too. It got so the the players would get really animated when I plunked that mini down. A virtual chorus of 'we're gonna kill him this time' would go up. It was a blast and really added to our game.

I buy and paint the occasional miniature. I use counters mostly and impromptu counters made from graph paper with entertaining doodles on them.

I don't buy much of anything. I have some freebies from various companies (odds and ends from WotC, some Fiery Dragon counters, etc.) but mostly I just use numbered poker chips. We do use a few lead minis that were painted by one of the guys in our group for the PCs and major monsters, but if he didn't have those it would be just odds and ends.

I sometimes use fiery dragon counters, but often it's just imagination if the terrain is not complicated. My friends sometimes plunder their board games (like the old HeroQuest) for figures.
