Do you use pictures?

Have you ever referenced a picture of a person, place, thing, etc. to determine what can or can not be done in a game with that person, place, thing, etc.?

Well, we draw most of the places out on battlemats, and I draw lots of pictures of npcs and sometimes items or locations. Not to mention all the old modules with illustrations books in them.

We also use maps - usually handdrawn - to display the surrounding area for a better understanding and a common base to build everyones imagination of the scenery upon. Sometimes we use appropriate pictures, if available, but this does happen more often in modern campaigns (i.e. when we played Shadowrun, we often used pictures to give a better impression of locations and had pictures for all PCs and major NPCs).

Character pictures are used, if available. My Avatar is the picture of my 19th level elven arcane trickster, BTW.

I occasionally draw views or items for the players. Right now, however, I'm drawing everything as a webcomic, in excuciating detail. Maybe I'm mad.

Yep , I used to create magical items cards for players. They were real popular with them and really enhanced play. Especially help clear up misconceptions about what something looked like.

I use pictures from my collection and my own sketches. Both help to set the mood and make things clear. A pictures worth a thousand words...
