They can't cut gnomes :(

Phb should have (IMO of course): Humans, Elves, Dwarfs, Halflings, Gnomes, Goblins, Orcs, Kobolds, Aasimar (or is it Aasimars?) and Tieflings (10 total, nice round number ^^)

Yes, because I run Eberron.

Even if they were bounced from the PHB, they would be included in the 4Eberron book, so I don't think you have to worry about that. I have had a lot of fun with them as the bright, pleasant, but creepily devious role they play in that setting.

They also could not be dropped from Dragonlance or any other setting where you need the mischievous and troublesome "Tinker Gnome" variety, which is their finest role, IMO. That's the one that I think is common enough that the PHB would suffer if they were missing.

In 4e races will be a lot more differentiated mechanically than they have been up to now so there could well be space issues here. I don't see them fitting in ten. I'm guessing many less popular potential PC races, such as goblins, will get bumped up to PHB 2+.

10 races is entirely too much for the fact that each race will have its own specialized abilities and feats.

I think Humans, Humans, Elves, Dwarfs, Halflings, and Gnomes is enough. Throw in Goblics, Orcs, and Kobolds in the DMG.

Yes.

With that said, I wish they would just bite the bullet and make them full-on tinker gnomes, be they effective (Warcraft) or bumbling (Dragonlance).

As they currently exist, I don't really see a core role for them, but I do like the race in the tinker/techie role.

I wouldn't mind more fey, big red hat-style gnomes, either, but I don't see how they could plausibly work as adventurers.

Also, most of my dwarves HAVE a sense of humor.

Since it sounds like there's a lot of race 'crunch' in a 4e race, I think I'd be in favor of a smaller selection of races, mostly because I'd rather use the pagecount for something else.

(snip)

Technically, they have tinker/techie role in FR, which is the first setting that's coming out...
