Dodge, why is it still crappy?

The mechanic might be crappy - it's a hassle to remember who somebody is 'targeting' with his dodge.

Powerwise the feat isn't too crappy. A great many PCs in my campaigns have taken it, without following the feat chain further. I wouldn't take it, but hell, my players put too much emphasis on character defences.

By the way it would be interesting to make a statistic about how many times the character is attacked and cannot use the Dodge bonus.

If you are attacked by 1 foe, then Dodge is equivalent to a flat +1 (except the first attacks while flatfooted).
If you are attacked by 2 foes at the same time, then Dodge's effect averages to +0.5.

But I think that it's generally rare for non-tanks to be attacked by many foes at once.

Dodge (the other one) [General]
You dodge area attacks well.
Prerequisite: Dex 13, Dive, Dodge, base reflex save +7
Benefit: Increase the dodge bonus to AC Dodge grants you by +1.

You gain the improved evasion ability.

Remember that Dodge is a feat about violence, exclusion, and degradation.

Just to mention: We have a houserule that Dodge applies to the first attack each round assuming you forget to announce your Dodge target. Very useful arrangement.

That seems to make it quite convenient to forget on purpose... :D

In Malls & Morons, I've toyed around with the idea of Dodge granting a +1 bonus versus adjacent opponents. I'm not sure if this is a good comprimise between +1 versus everyone and +1 versus one opponent. But I am generally a supporter of improving the baseline Dodge feat.

If you remember it. You can't forget "+1 ac". You write it - in pen- on the character sheet.

Put me down for +1 AC. Simple and IMHO *not* overpowered.

And really, how many feats are there that build upon Dodge's "choose one opponent" mechanic? I'm not using any of them IMC, and I have access to pretty much all the splatbooks. Even so, it'd be easy enough to build the "choose one opponent" language into *those* feats.

I like the idea of feats that build off the "Dodge buddy" a lot myself.

It was pointed out when we were discussing dodge in a Saga thread that Spycraft allows dodge to grant +2 vs one opponent or +1 vs all opponents. I'd go with this version if anything, it still allows the dodge buddy stuff, but it's also more generally useful.

I hate it when a crappy feat is wasted to gain access to decent ones. I don't want to have fun with my feats later. I want to have fun with the ones I get now.

Ergo, for me... Dodge sucks balls. That's right.

don't tell Daffy.

ho ho. welcome to sherwood.
