Does a Paladins Smite Multiply ?

Hi ! Folks,
I know this has been touched upon before, but I want to be explicitly sure.
This came up in my campaign; I have a Halfling Paladin that rides a Dog.
If I do a Lance Charge with the Spirited Charge Feat does the Smite Evil get
multiplied by X3 like all of the other components ( +1, str, lance dmg).
I thought it did, but my DM thinks it is like the added dice of Sneak Attack.

So, if you knowledgeable folks can give me consensus to present to my DM
it would be greatly appreciated. :D

Thanks,
Drago/Dave

I concur. It is essentially no different from extra damage added by Power Attack, and is multiplied because it is not expressed in dice.

The easiest way to remeber all this is the following:

Any time you mutiply damage you roll your damage (not including extra damage dice) as many times as the mutliplier and add it all together. Then roll the extra damage dice once (like a flaming weapon's d6) and add them in, too.

It really is as simple as that.

Remember though... A doubling from a charge, plus a triple damage crit only total out to x4 damage.

Multiplying
Sometimes a rule makes you multiply a number or a die roll. As long as you’re applying a single multiplier, multiply the number normally. When two or more multipliers apply to any abstract value (such as a modifier or a die roll), however, combine them into a single multiple, with each extra multiple adding 1 less than its value to the first multiple. Thus, a double (×2) and a double (×2) applied to the same number results in a triple (×3, because 2 + 1 = 3).

When applying multipliers to real-world values (such as weight or distance), normal rules of math apply instead. A creature whose size doubles (thus multiplying its weight by 8) and then is turned to stone (which would multiply its weight by a factor of roughly 3) now weighs about 24 times normal, not 10 times normal. Similarly, a blinded creature attempting to negotiate difficult terrain would count each square as 4 squares (doubling the cost twice
, for a total multiplier of ×4), rather than as 3 squares (adding 100% twice).

Picture now a Paladin with the Charging Smite ability from PHBII (2x smite damage on a charge, in exchange for special mount). He makes a mounted charge with a lance (2x damage) and scores a critical hit. Damage would be 4d8 + (Str bonus x4) + (smite damage x5)!!!

That has GOT to hurt!

Nope. Damage is (unless I misunderstand the ability):

(d8+ STR bonus + (Smite x 2)) + (d8+ STR bonus + (Smite x 2)) + (d8+ STR bonus + (Smite x 2)) + (d8+ STR bonus + (Smite x 2))

You do not multiply the parts of the damage, you roll the damage more than once - if you look at it that way it's easier to understand.

Thus, in this case, it comes out to 4d8 + (4 x STR bonus) + ( 8 x Smite damage).

Right?

Multiplication is essentially a misnomer. You're multiplying the base each time. They would have been better off stating "x2" as "+100%," "x3" as "+200%", etc.
